The Government delegate visiting the Technical University of Cartagena (18/11/2008)

The government delegate in Murcia, Rafael González Tovar, met this morning with the rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Felix Faure, as well as the governing team, and later paid a visit to the facilities of the same.

During the visit, the delegation stressed the importance in the current economic situation, the commitment to higher education and research.

In this sense, González Tovar said that "the University has shown in these ten years of the facility to create links with businesses and key productive sectors of our region, becoming an essential prop for the bet for another model of development innovation-based regional and industrial sector development. "

The delegate also highlighted the quality of higher education at the Polytechnic University this year has increased by 7.3% of their fees, despite the lower demand for technical studies in Spanish universities as a whole and the implementation of the new Degree in Architecture, already adapted to the European Higher Education Area.

With regard to the situation of Cartagena in the current economic context, Gonzalez Tovar said that "this is a very opportune time for the good training received by the Polytechnic University has its immediate consequence in the development of industrial activity and economic region of Cartagena. "

To this end, the delegate recalled the considerable efforts of the state budget for next year as the investment of 46 M € for the port of Cartagena and tailings basin, the completion of the tailings and highway funding for construction of S-80 in Navantia.

Creating Superior College Center at the Military Academy in San Javier

The delegate also pointed out that on 24 October the Council of Ministers decided that the Military Academy at San Javier offer university-level studies to the officers of the Air Force.

To do this, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena signed an agreement with the Ministry of Defence.

The new university center, installed at the Military Academy, will be dependent on the Polytechnic, managing it will be headed by a Joint Board (Ministry of Defense-University), chaired by a representative of the Secretary of Defense.

After signing the agreement, Gonzalez Tovar recalled "the Board shall appoint the director of the university and the General Directorate of the Ministry of Defence Infrastructure works begin to construct or rehabilitate buildings required."

In addition, the delegate also noted that after signing the agreement, will start the procedure for approval of curricula, a point which corresponds to the National Agency of Evaluation and Quality.

González Tovar has stressed that it is an innovation in our higher education "and that for the first time in the history of military education, provides an educational model built on two pillars, the military and the university."
