Bancaja will work with the City in celebration of Intercultural Week (10/11/2008)

The Municipal Institute of Social Services City of Cartagena, through a program of Immigration and Development Cooperation, participated in this year's annual call for proposals to develop a Bancaja Intercultural Week in the area of the municipality, through which will with an amount of 15,000 euros to develop the activities of the week.

The mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, accompanied by the councilman of Social Care, Antonio Calderon and the IMSS director, Antonio Mule, this morning received a grant from the Director of Area Bancaja, Antonio Rubio, director of the office in Cartagena, Antonio Garcia.

Intercultural Week, explained Antonio Calderon, will take place from 23 to 29 March 2009 and aims to sensitize the local population on immigration, to present other cultures, encourage participation, association and peaceful coexistence and intercultural impact on groups at risk of social exclusion.

Calderon pointed out that in the municipality of Cartagena there is currently 14.8% of immigrants on a total population of 211,329, ie over 31,000 people surveyed.

The largest nationalities Morocco, Ecuador and the United Kingdom, followed by Colombia, Romania, Bolivia, Ukraine and Ghana, among others.

The Immigration Office of the City Council is actively working with immigrants.

Currently exist in the municipality over a dozen partnerships formed by immigrants and participating fully in the scheduled performances.

They are, basically, of Ecuadorian nationality, Moroccan, Saharan and Eastern Europe.

It also has the participation of the immigrant aid associations (NGOs), in which immigrants are also involved, either as volunteers or paid staff, union members.

Area Director of Bancaja, Antonio Rubio, has stated that the entity is committed to social purposes such as this call, and one of its main priorities for this year has been the attention to the new citizens.

INTERCULTURAL WEEK

The activities to be developed are intended to capture the attention of the population, both native and immigrant, through centers of interest, based on the exhibition of popular culture (food, clothing, customs, handicrafts "), leisure activities (sports ), cultural (story workshop of the world, musical performances), awareness (round tables, film forum), and training, more outreach activities and propaganda.

The week is divided into a first phase, from Monday to Friday, in which the proceedings will be located in eleven districts or districts of the municipality, to conclude with two core activities, a sports competition, scheduled for Saturday, and a cultural market together musical performances to close the week on Sunday.

In the organization and further development of the various activities that comprise Intercultural Week will have the collaboration of the Federation of Neighborhood Associations and District Cartagena 'Fernando Garrido', through the various local associations, and all the institutional structure of the different areas of operation.
