Descends from widespread drug use in Cartagena (05/06/2008)

The latest study by the City Commission of Addictions yields positive data on drug use in the municipality of Cartagena, as it has been a general decline in consumption of substances considered addictive.

This was the main conclusion of sociological research study conducted by EDIS has presented its director, Raul Flores, in the context of Fourth Meeting Municipal Action Against Drug Addiction, which take place from yesterday until tomorrow at the Cultural Hall Cajamurcia in Pedreño Palace, with the aim, among others, to promote the Municipal Plan for 2008-2012.

This overall decrease is that the policies carried out by the Municipal Plan since its inception in 1995 are bearing fruit.

In the section of snuff consumption has broken the trend of increased consumption, especially among adolescents and women.

On alcohol, has also significantly reduced their consumption among the population of Cartagena and it is noteworthy that consumption among young people is not daily, but is directly related to recreation during the weekends.

In this regard it is noteworthy that more than half of young people already have a fun idea, separated from the consumption of alcohol.

Also noteworthy is the reduction of daily consumption of cannabis, down from 1.7 in 2003 to 0.6 in 2008.

Cocaine use has also declined in frequency, either some time in their life, in the last year or last month.

Associated with younger age is the consumption of synthetic drugs, which has been a reduction in consumption, and this is not daily and not continuous in time (tried it once in a lifetime).

Other substances whose consumption has declined in recent years are heroin, hallucinogens, amphetamines, tranquilizers and hypnotics.

One of the factors that should be stressed, the study is the family.

Therefore, the PMAD continue to work with families and mark this area as one of the priorities of future work.

The study also reflects an increasing awareness that people have the PMAD with respect to the previous survey in 2003.

The assessment Cartagena citizens give to their actions is considerably compared to 1998 and 2003.

At present, the valuation is set at 7.1 on a scale of 10.

The best known and most appreciated by the people of Cartagena are the drug abuse prevention activities carried out in the municipality, educational levels, socio-community and workplace.

The conference was inaugurated on Wednesday by the regional secretary of Citizen Services, Health Planning and Drug Addiction, Juan Manuel Ruiz, along with the Social Care Councillor of the City of Cartagena, Antonio Calderon.

In yesterday's speakers participated Juan Jiménez Rosset, Regional Coordinator of Drug Dependence of the Autonomous Community and Allegue Ana Cremades, Technical Coordinator of the Municipal Plan of Action on Drug Dependence of Cartagena.

In the day today, besides the presentation of the findings of the study, there have been other interventions such as the so-called "Education for Life Skills and Strategies to Prevent Drug Abuse and other risk behaviors among adolescents", by the director EDEX Prevention Foundation, Juan Carlos Melero, who works in drug prevention in education, developing programs and actions aimed at students of primary and secondary education.

In his lecture stressed the importance of prevention, intervention focusing on developing life skills in children, family and school, as the core of preventive programs.

With a wonderful presentation on life skills that enable people to interact in healthy ways about themselves and their environment.

As a final morning activity took place the education roundtable with the title: Experiences and Proposals for improving the performances of health education and prevention in schools participating in it: Eusebio Díaz Martínez, representative of the association "Family Action", Emilio Bernal Andres, President of FAPA "Cartagena, Mariano Perez, Representative CONCAPA Association of Cartagena, M ª José Cerezuela Fernandez, Coordinator of the Education Plan for Health in the School of the Polytechnic Institute of Cartagena, and acting as moderator of the same, Damián Pérez Olmos, coordinator of the Department of Education of the City of Cartagena.
