The Rosell serves more than 70 laryngeal cancer patients throughout the Region (30/05/2008)

The regional secretary of Citizen Services, Health Planning and Drug Addiction, Juan Manuel Ruiz Ros, today inaugurated the Second Conference in Cartagena Intercommunity Otorrinolaingología Nursing at the University Hospital Santa María del Rosell.

This meeting has as main objective the creation of a forum to raise awareness about the new trends in cancer of the larynx and the experience of the patients have been operated once.

In this sense, parallel to the conference, the center two years ago created a separate consultation focused on serving patients with cancer of the larynx.

Thus, the Rosell Hospital became the first hospital in Spain to offer such intensive treatment.

The special unit dedicated to these patients care of patients before surgery, during and after, and in the latter case, the treatment lasts five years.

In 2006, 28 patients opened laryngectomized health unit: in 2007, 19 new patients were added to the above, and this year an additional 27 laryngeal cancer patients entered the new medical unit.

In total, today, the 74 patients treated Rosell throughout the region who suffer from this disease.

Laryngeal cancer is one of the finest in existence, given the particular sensitivity of the area in which it appears, because the larynx is a tube that we use for breathing, the onset of the disease usually occurs almost exclusively among smokers.

In addition, the intervention, whether through surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy causes side effects mainly sensitive to talk about disability.

Because of this, treating a cancer of the larynx is a complex and gradual process.

First you must provide the patient with a specific power to prepare the larynx to the operation and minimize the extent of possible outcomes following the intervention.

But the longer the process to be applied once the patient has been operated.

All this implies that laryngeal cancer patients have to be addressed from a perspective very different, so special Rosell unit features several doctors from different fields and setting up multidisciplinary consultation.

These conferences have also placed special emphasis on the work of the relatives of the sick.

In this sense, the Second Conference of Otorhinolaryngology Nursing have received a "family workshop, coordinated by a psychologist where the family have contributed their experiences and shared their experiences at a forum to soften the experience of living with a relative who has been involved.
