A thesis UPCT identified a gene that controls the growth of leaves, flowers, seeds and fruits (19/01/2016)

A doctoral thesis at the Institute of Plant Biotechnology (IBV) of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) has verified a component of the genome involved in the control of growth by cell expansion, the lateral organs of plants.

"The validation of this gene, which would modify the growth of leaves, flowers, seeds or fruits predictably, is an important milestone and can have a huge impact on agricultural production," says Marcos Gutiérrez-Cortines Egea, director of the thesis with Julia Weiss.

The researcher Mary Stained Red agronomist has developed during his thesis 'Functional Genomics of Instruments for the Improvement of Characteristics in Ornamentals Flower' a methodology to validate biological components in plants.

"One of the areas of greatest scientific activity in recent years is the characterization of components in biological systems.

The massive genome sequencing has yielded catalogs thousands of components, because the genomes typically have between 15,000 to 40,000 genes.

These genes are under validation methodologies to verify the biological process that meet qualitative and / or quantitative functions, "explains Marcos Egea.

"The validation process is a mechanism for analyzing a component in different conditions so you can be sure you have a predictable behavior, and is typical of the transition from basic research to practical application.

In our case, it has been developing both as a validation methodology to determine the level of stability and reliability of a biological component, "adds Julia Weiss.

Publications derived from the theory are found in journals of high impact index (5.97 and 5.75), showing the quality of the science developed by doctoral student.
