Polytechnic Universities unite in UP4 to boost technological research and teaching quality (16/11/2015)

To increase the value they bring to society, the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) create the UP4 association.

This network adds the excellence of the four public universities of technology to multiply their capabilities and strengthen collaboration in teaching, research, and knowledge transfer and innovation.

In a joint event, Carlos Conde, president of the UPM, Enric Fossas, rector of the UPC, Francisco J. Mora, rector of the UPV, and Jose Antonio Franco, president of the UPCT, today presented in Madrid this initiative which brings together Reference academic environment in the context of higher education in our country.

In fact, the four are recognized seal of Campus of International Excellence.

UP4's objectives is to "share resources to improve the proficiency of students, promoting research in the fields of architecture, engineering and computer science and develop common actions to improve the competitiveness of the productive sector," explains Carlos Conde.

The rector of the UPM also stands out as one of its purposes "to promote the advancement of scientific and technological culture in Spain, stimulating new vocations".

"With this alliance, the four universities lay the foundations to increase their contribution to society," says Enric Fossas, rector of the UPC.

"The polytechnic universities are especially close to the productive sector for its high level of transfer.

Working with a higher level of cooperation between us will allow us to get more and better companies to help them innovate, to become more competitive.

In the background, trying to improve our service to society by joining forces and giving greater visibility to the potential of technical universities, "he concludes.

Universities reference

The four Polytechnics get better academic performance of their students and provide its graduates more employable.

Currently, students UP4 represent 32% of all undergraduate students in the branch of engineering and architecture of our country and 38% of graduate.

With a high level of internationalization, these universities meet 26% of international students pursuing a masters in our country.

"The new possibilities are opened from the UP4 association in terms of internationalization will allow us to participate in European and international calls for both in teaching and R & D projects;

attract foreign talent, and offer international curriculum endorsed by the four Polytechnics "says Francisco J. Mora, rector of the UPV.

Despite that together account for 5% of the Spanish institutions of higher education, only in 2013, four Polytechnics accounted for 32% of the scientific production of Spanish universities.

In them it was read 9% of the theses presented in the last five years in the Spanish university system.

In the last decade, they recorded 22% of national patents generated in Spanish universities and captured 31% of overall revenue for applied research.

Their intangible investment in R & D accounts for 17% of all the Spanish universities.

"With this alliance we must be able to convey the strategic importance for the country is to have more and better trained engineers.

In the most advanced societies are the cornerstone of innovation and competitiveness of enterprises, "the rector UPCT Jose Antonio Franco.

Different lines of action

The UP4 cooperation partnership will result in the implementation of different courses of action to enhance the education of its students and increase their mobility.

The design of a joint offer a specialized undergraduate and postgraduate training of international relevance, or the calls for competition and technological challenges for students, are some of them.

Among other actions, in the research field a joint structure for the sale of patents (patents Bank) will be created.

It also sets up a joint platform to solve technological challenges posed by companies and institutions in the productive sector.

The first two come hand Solutions program, the challenges of Gas Natural Fenosa and Consum, a leading company in the distribution sector.

In the first case, researchers must find innovative solutions for the integration of gas distribution systems and electricity, and energy harvesting to power sensors in gas distribution networks.

Meanwhile, Consum seeks ideas to create the smart shopping cart.

In addition, addressed to students of the four universities, Safety Engineers promotes a contest to compete in multidisciplinary teams.

The objective is the development and prototyping of a motor vehicle on a reduced scale, considering as key points in designing energy efficiency and autonomous driving control.

It offers three prizes endowed with 3,000, 2,000 and 1,000 euros respectively.

The collaboration that opens UP4 is established both at institutional level and in schools, research facilities, faculty and in the field of management.

The presentation of the UP4 association has taken place at the Polytechnic University of Madrid.
