Havana involved in the project to declare Cartagena as a Cultural Landscape of Humanity (06/11/2015)

Havana will participate in the Cultural Landscape of Humanity project aims pursued get the Cartagena Declaration as Cultural Landscape of Humanity by UNESCO.

The Project Steering Committee met this morning at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) to develop the roadmap to follow from now.

At the meeting were present by the Cartagena Polytechnic Rector, José Antonio Franco and the vice president of Infrastructure, Equipment and Sustainability, Jose Perez;

the Director General of the International Center Foundation for the Conservation of Heritage (CICOP), Miguel Angel Fernandez Matrán, Captain Pedro Pemartín Sirvent, the Commander, Jose Luis Baron Touriño, and the Councillor for Culture and Heritage, Ricardo Segado García.

During the meeting, the Executive Committee members have marked the road map to be followed from now the project started a year ago.

For it has been set to work together with Havana, Cadiz and Ferrol.

In December an international seminar in Havana on Fortifications in Modern and Contemporary Times is organized.

The objective, as has just explained the Director General of CICOP is to complete the project in 2017. "It's about doing a good job that reflects in Cartagena culturally and internationally," he explained.

Matrán Fernández insisted that for now "no rush" to get the name of UNESCO, as "this must have its route", which will end in two years with the International Forum on the Royal Armouries UPCT Illustrated in the Spanish Monarchy.

"These papers will complete the project then begin its political stage and approval by the Assembly," he stated.

During this project, the UPCT have an important role, as the University has recovered "an architectural heritage of the first order for the city", said the Rector.

In addition, the institution will play a technical, supportive role, as teachers of the School of Architecture and Building are involved in the project.

"Now we have to get to work.

It is a long-distance work, but we must impart a good cruising speed so that, with the right direction, goals are achieved, "he added.
