Five affected in Cartagena (of nine that exist) and members of the Thalidomide Victims Association of Spain (Avite) were personarán morning from 9.30 am in the city of Cartagena to attend the plenary.

Cartagena citizens presented for debate and vote on a motion that the City of Cartagena offer their unanimous solidarity to victims of Thalidomide support;

his struggle for decades maintained for the legal recognition of suffering serious malformations.

Cartagena citizens think that any political party, any municipal group, no ideology, should appropriate a claim, which is shared by the vast majority of Cartagena, so, the Municipal Group will propose to the Board prior to the Plenary Speakers it is precisely a member of the Association of Victims of Thalidomide who read the motion.

Citizens spokesman in Cartagena has maintained in recent months contacts with different members Avite (the Thalidomide Victims Association of Spain), in order to ascertain the situation of the group and the recognition of their rights.

In one of these meetings, the spokesman for Citizens Cartagena, Manuel Padin, expressed his hope that they will be the protagonists of the plenary, a request that was welcomed by the association.

Manuel Padin considered "regardless of the Supreme Court ruling is necessary to ensure that all public institutions to offer their support, recognize the victims of thalidomide, its status affected, prior to the granting of any aid and compensation step, coming from where they come from, in this sense, the support of all municipalities is key, because Cartagena has to join this national outcry for justice for these people. "

In the motion, Citizens asks the City of Cartagena, which is directed to the Government of Spain and claim those affected annuities, as happens in other European countries;

thus, it would join the rest of Spanish municipalities and institutions and associations that have already claimed the granting of such aid.

The motion also seeks to urge the City Council to the German pharmaceutical GrĂĽnenthal (responsible for manufacturing and settled in Spain) is directed to join the remaining claims and demand that they compensate the affected Spanish.

Thalidomide was a drug patented in Spain in 1954 and was intended to alleviate nausea and vomiting in pregnant women.

However, following its use they began to be born a disproportionate number of children with severe deformities in the arms and legs, even in the absence of both, withdrawing from the market in 1975.

Thalidomide victims amounted to fifty thousand worldwide, of which three thousand were Spanish.

In the Region of Murcia currently reside thirty six victims, of which nine are in Cartagena.

While in other European countries victims of Thalidomide they enjoy compensation, annuities, specialized medical units and gratuity drugs, prosthetics and ortho-prosthetics;

in Spain none of these grants are approved.

Therefore, citizens must believe that the city of Cartagena expresses its unanimous support and solidarity to victims of Thalidomide Spanish
