An expert says that solar cookers avoid the death of four million people a year in the Third World (04/06/2015)

The professor of the Carlos III University, Antonio Lecuona, advocated this morning at the 9th National Congress of Engineering Thermodynamics held in UPCT for using solar cookers in the Third World and avoid the death of 4 million people to year.

Lecuona, who was the first speaker of the conference, explained that Third World countries are often cook with wood, "and that wood smoke has terrible consequences.

Million deaths occur each year, more than AIDS or other diseases.

Is an ongoing global war, "he says.

For a couple of years, Antonio Lecuona is investigating the functions and development of solar cookers.

"It is possible to help a third of humanity," he says explaining that this system is based on using the greenhouse effect due to the heat, the temperature rises and the food is cooked.

"We are not aware that you can cook without having to carry food to the boiling point," admits Lecuona.

And, according to him, the so-called low-temperature cooking is a culinary trend, "the important thing is that people in these countries to maintain the kitchens themselves."

He advocates that NGOs with this type of cuisine to underdeveloped countries and teach women how solar cookers work and how they can build a.

On the other hand, relates how his research team has developed storage stoves to cook during those times of day when there is no sunlight.

"These stoves accumulate heat in large quantities during the day and keeping them in baskets with wool it is stored there to cook for the night and breakfast the next day.

So rife more than ordinary solar cookers "he warns.

To do this research, experts are using old pots, "which is the most similar to what we used in poor countries" and have patented some of his research to prevent companies owning can do this technology and decide to market it.

"As the university owned the patent can assign" he adds.

Lecuona also tasted food cooked with this technology and says "are much better" than traditional because "it destroys vitamins and less meat and fish are tastier because cooking without boiling".

The National Congress of Engineering Thermodynamics was attended by about 140 researchers.

The event has the support of the Seneca Foundation of Murcia, will continue until Friday at noon various areas of the School of Industrial Engineering (ETSII).
