People with intellectual disabilities across the region meet in Cartagena to advance their independence

The PROLAM ASTUS Center hosts the XV Regional Meeting of Self-Advocates of FEAPS Murcia.

Nearly a hundred selfadvocates Caravaca, Mula, Murcia and Cartagena, among other locations, shared experiences for more autonomy thinking about his future.

Nearly a hundred adults with intellectual disabilities from different parts of the region are now working capacity in Cartagena to make important life decisions.

They do so with an eye toward the future and the scenarios they face outside the parental home.

These people today put together what that work throughout the year in their respective associations by means of so-called 'self-advocacy groups. "

They are mutual support and the support of a professional with the aim of attaining greater personal autonomy as possible.

Today is already the XV Regional Meeting of Self-Advocates of FEAPS Murcia, Federation of Organizations for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities and Cerebral Palsy Murcia.

It hosts one of its member associations, ASTUS in its center PROLAM of Sorrows.

Here people gather with disabilities of this and neighboring states as well as Cartagena ASID Caravaca de la Cruz (APCOM), Mule (Intedis) and Murcia (ASSIDO, ASTRAPACE and PEEM).

The meeting was opened by Councillor for Social Affairs of the City of Cartagena, Antonio Calderon, along with the president of both the Association and ASTUS FEAPS RM federation, Joaquin Barbera.

Self-Advocates program that performs FEAPS Murcia in their associations provides an opportunity for people with intellectual disabilities to realize their full potential to be independent and manage their lives by themselves, always to the maximum extent possible in each case.

For that, they have the support of a professional in each group to help them get the most out of sharing.

Both the program and the meeting are funded by the Ministry of Health through programs called '0.7%'.

That means it is possible by marking the taxpayers 'Solidarity X' in the box for other social purposes on your tax return.

FEAPS Murcia is the result of the union of over 3,000 families working together for the welfare of people with intellectual disabilities 25 forming associations.

Throughout Spain, FEAPS comprises 891 institutions spread over the Spanish territory.

It represents more than 106,700 people with intellectual disabilities, 235,000 family members, 24,000 employees and 8,000 volunteers.
