The doctoral student at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), David Martínez Granados, has won the Booty Foundation for his study on improving the management of irrigation water.
The research, "The role of desalinisation to address aquifer overdraft in SE Spain" published on 4 June in the Journal of Environmental Management ", which is second author Javier Calatrava Leyva, Professor in the area of ​​economics, sociology and UPCT Agricultural Policy, has competed with 17 nominations.
The winning paper proposes the use of desalination to mitigate the overexploitation of aquifers in southeastern Spain, among other alternatives.
According to the study results, the alternatives analyzed would have a significant impact on the economy of the area, desalted resources that reduce but not eliminate impact and alleviate the pressure on groundwater resources, the researchers add.
The "Young Talent Awards for Sustainable Water Management" of the Botín Foundation are part of the activities and programs of the Water Observatory in B mode management models that allow water savings, improve management, increase eco-social productivity or contribute to better conservation.
The prize is endowed with 1,500 euros.
David Martínez Granados, a native of Murcia, is an agronomist by UPCT and student of doctoral program in Advanced Techniques in Agricultural Research and Development and Food (TAIDA) of the Higher Technical School of Agricultural Engineering.
The Botín Foundation will present the awards on December 4 at its headquarters in Madrid.
