UPCT researchers highlight the efficiency and productivity of water use in irrigation of the Region of Murcia (18/08/2014)

The research group of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) "design and management in irrigated agriculture" has conducted a study on water use in crops in the Region of Murcia, a major vegetable production areas to outside of Europe, during the decade 2002-2011.

Funded by the European research project SIRRIMED (Sustainable use of irrigation water in the Mediterranean region), work has been developed in the irrigation communities of Campo de Cartagena, Lorca, Tajo-Segura Calasparra Cieza, Pantano de la Cierva and Miraflores five of the most representative of the region.

The research, conducted by Victoriano Martínez, Martín and Bernardo Mariano Soto, has been a completely scientific and technical innovator through different types of indicators has extensively characterized the irrigation of the Region of Murcia study.

The research has provided interesting analyzes the effects of water scarcity and modernization in the irrigated areas, the link between the use of water and energy in irrigation, or potential impact on energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases associated with the use of desalinated water for irrigation.

Have also been able to determine characteristics of irrigation in the region and its high efficiency distribution, their high cost, large variations regarding suffering water available, presenting a very high value of agricultural production, a stable but limited agricultural activity by the availability of water and do not meet the water needs of crops.

The research results have been published in three scientific journals in the field of engineering and water management in irrigated and Energy, Computer and Electronics in Agriculture Agricultural Water Management are, and in the book "Irrigation in the Region Murcia.

Characterization and analysis by management indicators ", which has contributed to its publication UPCT, the Central Union of Irrigation Tajo-Segura and Irrigation Community Campo de Cartagena.

The electronic version of the book is freely available on the Digital Repository UPCT (http://hdl.handle.net/10317/4069).
