Apply the results of a thesis at the Polytechnic of Cartagena in the design of large dams (11/08/2014)

The investigation of Jose Maria Carrillo, led by Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Hydraulic UPCT, Luis Castillo, proposes new methods for evaluating hydrodynamic actions bowls energy dissipation and thus reduce erosion in the foot of prey.

The thesis has been used to design a dam being built on the river Advertise in Ecuador.

This research is conducted in Spain the fourth in a line that began in 1987 Castillo Professor at the Polytechnic of Catalonia.

The thesis updates the existing results on free pouring and supplement formulations for devices drain the dams, the last held at the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne in 2011.

"The dams are essential for humans.

Are the source of water for the population and crop industry and in many cases generate electricity.

Your failure or destruction can affect thousands of people, not to mention the high economic cost would entail repair or reconstruction and months and even years without service in the area, "said Carrillo.

In Spain there are over 1,200 large dams, of which more than half were built over 40 years ago.

"One of the effects of climate change is that rainfall is presented which generates highly concentrated heavy flooding that should be evacuated safely by devices drain dams.

In this sense some of these devices do not have adequate capacity, which is why it will be necessary to evaluate the hydrodynamic flow by actions coronation of dams, "explains the researcher.

The thesis entitled "Numerical and experimental methodology for designing the dissipation bowls sobrevertido dam Factory" won the highest rating (Cum Laude) and has been supported in part by the Ministry of Science and Technology through emulsifies the project in the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Center for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works of the Ministry of Development (CEH-CEDEX), and UPCT involved.

For research, Hyd @ m group of the School of Civil Engineering and Mining UPCT built in the laboratory model 4 meters high, flows up to 100 liters per second and measures pressures, speeds and aeration This has allowed us to study the different hydrodynamic shares foot of the dam.

The view is supported by two papers accepted in the Journal of Hydraulic Research and the Journal of Hydroinformatics and two in review in refereed journals index scientific impact JCR, three articles in other international journals, 6 papers in national journals and participation in 22 international and 9 national conferences.

Carrillo also presides in UPCT one of 28 groups worldwide that brings together young researchers in Hydraulic Engineering in the International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research and the Environment (IAHR).
