A student poses a Road tram project as improving mobility in the city of Cartagena (04/08/2014)

"Cable is a comprehensive solution to the problems of congestion and private vehicle congestion at rush hour in the city of Cartagena," according to the conclusions of Sara Rodríguez grade student, School of Civil and Mining University project Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).

The work bet this infrastructure as an alternative to conventional transport and develops a path of 8.3 kilometers through the city center, the area of greatest population density and more services for citizens.

The estimated cost is 55 million euros.

The student proposes the connection of this new infrastructure with the existing line LVEF to service to the Mar Menor.

Also raises a rehabilitation of bus routes from the town to reconcile public transport services and avoid duplication.

The work, entitled "Study on the implementation of a tram in Cartagena" and directed by Pilar Jimenez Research Group Engineering and Infrastructure Transport, poses a tramway circular path in a figure eight, whose common axis two-way flows from street to street Bruna Angel Gisbert.

Your full tour, taking as its starting point the intersection of Paseo Alfonso XIII Street Captains Ripoll, passing in the street Captains Ripoll, Cuesta del Batel, Paseo Alfonso XII, Gisbert street, street Charity Merganser Street, Angel Street Bruna, Jorge Juan, Paseo Alameda de San Antón, Calle Real, Paseo Alfonso XII, again through the central axis from street to street Gisbert Bruna Angel to return to the starting point for the City of Union Street and Ronda Sparta.

The student, who is pursuing a master's degree in the German University of Stuttgart, has 15 stops, in some cases using the existing bus stop, and others, in places where there would be space problem to a new dimension.

The raised line initially will explode with three tram units with a capacity of 188 passengers, with a frequency of 10 minutes provides a maximum capacity of 1,300 passengers per hour and direction, according to the director of labor, Pilar Jiménez.

One of the main features of this project is that it passes through the narrow streets of Cartagena that form part of the central axis, street Gisbert, Charity and Merganser, raises a supply floor tram in order to remove associated infrastructure the catenary for lack of space.

In fact, in that stretch, the road would be shared by tram and private vehicle, there would be exclusive platform, and therefore it could be converted into area 30.

Among the proposed advantages, besides the ecological component, the projected path can be flexible and adapt to the demands of the city, not only with changes in frequency but also of travel.

For example, events such as Easter or the Night of Museums, it could be left without light rail service on part of the street Gisbert, Charity and Merganser accessing citizens to the center of town for the rest of the stops, including Angel Street Bruna, encouraging people to walk and not using private transport and busy days as indicated in the downtown area.

The student has raised three proposals in their final degree before reaching the solution described project.

The selection of that line has made from a multi-criteria analysis evaluating the possibility of exclusive platform for the tram around the path or in part, the population served, accessibility of stops, proximity to points of particular importance ( commercial or social), the condition of the tram the rest of traffic, the geometry of the layout and cost.
