The patent UPCT a guidance system of marine buoys using wind energy (04/06/2014)

"A very simple idea, like all great inventions".

Juan Antonio López, researcher at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, defines the use of candles to guide buoys patented UPCT.

"Is to use aerodynamics as the driving force to establish the orientation of the buoy you want," says Roque Torres, co Riquelme in the research group DSIE (Division of Systems Engineering and Electronics) and manage Project Race Weekend Alumna Mary Cynthia Golpe that developed during and Testo this innovation, the international patent was published last March.

The orientation of the buoy used to optimize energy resources, allowing redirected towards the Sun, as a function of time, the solar panels to the electrical system of the buoy feeds.

Can also be used to set the perspective of a video surveillance camera.

The idea of that "candles tend to have the minimum resistance to the wind" has Torres, so by a control system, sensors, and software, a small engine coupled to a candle is managed, that in turn forces the buoy to move towards where interests.

"The candle holds the buoy frame" sums Riquelme.

The total budget of the system, including sailing, motor and sensors, is 50 euros.

"No expensive buoy, because it would reduce the size of the solar panel," Torres added.

Besides Roque Torres and Juan Antonio Lopez, several researchers DSIE as Pencho Soto, spent years perfecting coastal monitoring buoys with which measured various parameters of the hydrodynamics of the Mar Menor, and to control the quality and volume of water in irrigation reservoirs.

The buoys are telecommunicated each other and a base station that collects data.

These developments also meant students did their theses or projects, as Honorio Albaladejo Cristina Navarro, along with those mentioned above, founded the company Widhoc Smart Solutions, a spin-off that won the regional UPCT XXI Entrepreneur Award La Caixa and having ceded the commercial exploitation of the new patent.

Cintia Mary Blow, the student who worked on the development of the patented idea, described as "good to see that it's worth and practical use what you have studied."

Its director of PFC, Roque Torres says that "students have great potential and are willing to participate in projects that become reality their theoretical knowledge."

Another student is making a Final Project to measure the energy output of solar panels installed on directional buoys.

Researchers estimate to be 30% more efficient.
