A hundred students from 50 primary and secondary plant garbancillos Tallante to avoid extinction (30/01/2014)

Child and Secondary Students of Colegio San Agustin de Fuente Álamo participated today in planting a new population of Garbancillo Tallante (Astragalus nitidiflorus) Critically endangered and whose only world population is composed of just 200 copies fragmented in small populations in volcanic hills near Tallante and Ports Santa Barbara.

The initiative, organized by the School of Agriculture of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena in collaboration with the Colegio San Agustin and the Institution of Land Stewardship Conservation Garbancillo Tallante (association created in 2013 under the LIFE + "Conservation Project Astragalus nitidiflorus its potential in the Region of Murcia area "to involve users and land owners in the conservation of its natural and cultural heritage), has secured the participation of 50 primary school children, tutored by as many third and fourth ESO.

With the help of farmers and neighbors Tallante and Ports Santa Barbara Bank partners Custody, students planted 50 new plants in volcanic soil garbancillo thanks to an escrow agreement with the owner.

Young plants used were from nurseries put up by the School of Agriculture at its experimental farm "Thomas ferro" La Palma.

Despite the cold and wind, young schoolboys eagerly planted throughout the plant which were available on soft holes were prepared using older tools provided by the Bank of Custody.

As a final reward, apart from the satisfaction of seeing the new population in its natural habitat, a welcome break with breakfast awaited them in the canteen of the local neighborhood association Tallante.

The initiative had two main objectives of that LIFE project being developed by the School of Agricultural UPCT since mid-2012 and funded by the European Union to create new populations garbancillo own volcanic terrains in the natural range of the species and to do outreach in schools and other educational institutions of all biodiversity values ​​associated with the plant in order to teach younger than the conservation of nature can sustain a healthy personal and economic development.
