The UN includes Hull urban transformation in his Catalogue of Good Practices (21/01/2013)

The Town Planning has proven proud that the Cartagena project has been selected as one of the 100 best in the world, among the 4,000 performances presented at the Dubai International Award for Best Practices

The United Nations has included the transformation of the historic city of Cartagena in the International Catalogue of Best Practices to Improve the Living Conditions in Cities, which discloses that organization highlights the experiences carried out in the planet in the field of sustainable urban development.

This catalog is made ​​with the experiences presented at the Dubai International Award for Best Practices, organized by the Dubai Municipality and Habitat Committee of the United Nations every two years.

The experience presented by the city of Cartagena to the ninth edition of the award, named Cartagena old town centered sustainable urban transformation process that has taken place in the historic center of Cartagena during the past ten years, has been classified by the jury as best practice or BEST, representing one of the highest ratings given in the context of this Award.

For the Town Planning, Joaquín Segado, it is great news that among the 4,000 projects that have occurred worldwide, 100 have been selected as the best and one of them is to Cartagena, and that although we present no ambition to win, just give value to our work.

Segado identified as major aspects of the project to improve the quality of life of citizens in the historical, recovery and enhancement of historical and artistic heritage, socio-economic revitalization of this area and the improvement of environmental conditions, which has led the jury to award grant BEST rating.

As recalled in charge of urban planning, urban transformation project of historic Cartagena and was awarded in 2011 in the ninth edition of the Sustainable City Awards, which annually convenes the organization Environmental Forum.

REWARDING THE QUALITY OF LIFE

The Dubai International Award for Best Practices was created for the United Nations International Conference held in Dubai in November 1995 and aims to stimulate the development of practices that have a positive impact on improving the quality of life for residents of cities and publicize those who have had a positive impact.

The practices presented to the Award are judged by an international jury that awards 12 prizes each call and selects the most relevant experiences that will become part of the catalog of good practices, ranking as winning (AWARD), best practices (BEST), good practices (GOOD) and promising practices (PROMISING).

The call is open to national and regional governments, local authorities, NGOs and agencies, academic and research institutions, public and private foundations, media and individuals.

In this last call, have been awarded a total of 12 awards and has been tagged as BEST practices 100, 185 and 80 as GOOD as promising.

The only practice that has been awarded Spanish is La Ciudad de los Ninos, an experience made ​​by the association of Madrid Education Action based on the incorporation of children to participation processes associated with decision making and building of the city.

Of the remaining Spanish practices, 17 have been listed as BEST, 32 and 8 as GOOD as promising.

Currently, the list of best practices of some 4,000 UN includes experiences in a total of 140 countries.
