The City and UPCT join forces to prevent the extinction of garbancillo of Tallante (19/11/2012)

Until 2004 it was believed that the Atratagalus nitidiflorus, also known as garbanzillo of Tallante, had died, but no.

To prevent the disappearance of this plant, the City Council has signed an agreement with the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPC).

The purpose of this project is to develop sonvenio Conservation in Astragalus Nitidiflorus potential habitat in the Region of Murcia, holding a group of researchers from the UPCT, with the collaboration of the Autonomous Region and the city of Cartagena.

The mayor, Pilar Barreiro, and the Rector of the UPCT, Jose Antonio Franco, have signed a cooperation agreement in the presence of the Councillor for the Environment, Palazón Carolina.

The project, co-funded by the European program LIFE + Biodiversity, will last four years, namely until June 1, 2016.

The total project cost amounts to 1,263,033 euros, of which the EU will contribute 45.90%, 579,731 euros, while the city of Cartagena subsidize 119,358 euros.

Among the actions to be carried out the study highlights the behavior of the species, germination and adaptation to a nursery and the search for new habitats.

The Tallante garbancillo of a plant species is endangered listed on the official list of wild species under formal protection, contained in the Spanish Catalogue of Endangered Species and is also in the catalog Protected Wild Flora Regional.

A plan also awareness and outreach to publicize the existence and characteristics of this plant in schools, social organizations and the general public.
