Emir Kusturica opened La Mar de Musicas with The Time of the Gypsies (30/04/2012)

After the extraordinary success of his debut in L'Opera de Paris in 2007, the punk opera Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica's Time of the Gypsies, goes on tour, in a format.

The premiere and the beginning of his world tour will be in Cartagena, La Mar de Musicas, becoming the opening of a festival that this year will be dedicated to Africa, New Sounds. Tickets are 55 and 38 euros and it can be purchased at www . lamardemusicas.com

The work is based on his famous eponymous film, which won the award for Best Director at Cannes in 1989, and has the participation of over 40 performers on stage, in addition to its Balkan rock band The No Smoking Orchestra, performers usual the soundtracks of his films.

The tragicomedy wild and inimitable visual style and formal characteristic of Kusturica's films are always present, enhanced by Balkan sounds melancholy tinged punk rock, in an adaptation that is not limited to being a musical transposition of the film, but has life own. This is a theater, and game rules are very different, says the director, who oversees every single facet of his artistic works, from stage management to musical composition and the script, written with Gordan Mihic and Nenad Jankovic who inspired the final text.

Over more than two hours, the play follows the misadventures of young Perhan, son of a soldier and a gypsy, madly in love with his neighbor Azra, whose mother wants to marry a rich man.

While dreams of becoming a millionaire to be able to return his beloved, the young man lives with his grandmother, his sister, disabled, and an uncle also womanizer who woos the young Azra.

Balkan punk to folk, from rock to classical music or Central European gypsy folk song, musical styles are diverse and merge seamlessly like fireworks on stage, that immerse the viewer in a colorful opera world, where people dance and drink, kids play soccer or go squawking geese.

But where there is room for a counterpoint to the seriousness and melancholy.

The Time of the Gypsies is located closer to the musical comedy of the opera in the classic sense. May be located rather between operetta and musical.
