Health will test a new repellent to ward off gulls (19/04/2012)

For the fifth consecutive year, the City of Cartagena, through the Department of Health has launched the Campaign to Control Population Gaviotas, aimed at halting the colonization of the yellow-legged gull nests stressing during the spawning season egg, a campaign that begins today and runs through June 30.

The councilman of Health, Ã ngel Nicolas Bernal, outlined in the presentation of this performance that has ensured that the seagull population does not increase, on target to tackle the problem before it becomes a pest, since without this work we do would have doubled the number of copies.

As for the campaign data, 2011, revised in 178 points, 94 nests were found, of which 99 chicks were removed and 83 eggs were punctured.

The Head of Health Promotion and Municipal Laboratory, María José Hernández, and the biologist the company responsible for control of birds, Jose Morales, announced during the presentation that this year, as new and as a test, apply a chemical which acts as a repellent to be impregnated with the areas to prevent recidivism nods gull nest.

The product, based on oleoresins, not harm the birds, and is used for the first time in Cartagena while in other municipalities.

NEW CENSUS OF PIGEONS

With regard to the pigeon population, Ã ngel Nicolas Bernal noted a decrease in the number of catches, which went from 3,709 in 2010 to 2,543 in 2011.

The data reveal that the number of copies has stabilized since the last census of pigeons, in 2005, and is already working on a new census to count the number of partners both in the urban area and the periphery .

NO MOSQUITOES PICAN

The councilman of Health has sent a message of reassurance about the supposed plague of mosquitoes that have been generated in the Rambla de Benipila and that has come down some streets in the town, as Carmen Street.
