The Community is working with the city of Cartagena to reduce energy consumption through solar, biomass and biogas (24/01/2012)

The Ministry of Universities, Business and Research, through the Energy Management Agency of the Region of Murcia (Argemir), work with the City of Cartagena to get a 20 percent reduction in pollutant emissions to the atmosphere of this municipality with new renewable energy facilities, in particular, solar thermal, biomass and biogas.

For this purpose, the Minister Jose Ballesta today signed a protocol with the mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, in establishing energy saving measures to achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions by 20 percent and thus fulfill the commitments of Covenant of Mayors for 2020.

These measures of efficiency savings and is being studied to create a combined installation of solar thermal and biomass, plant debris from pruning parks and gardens, to supply power to municipal sports facilities.

Also, energy certification is scheduled City Council, the installation of a biogas plant in the municipality and the hiring of energy service companies to optimize consumption in street lighting.

The Minister explained that in addition to promoting respect for the environment, "the implementation of this plan is going to report a triple to the region, generating economic activity directly through energy service companies, encourages the government savings and better use of economic resources at our disposal and, finally, increases competitiveness by achieving the same result with less energy consumption. "

In this sense, José Ballesta praised the effort of the City of Cartagena, "a town that in recent years has been characterized by their continued investment in renewable energy, sustainable transport and energy efficiency. Some investments in which has been actively Agency for Energy Management in the Region of Murcia ".

He added, "It was the first municipality of Cartagena the Region implemented a free bike loan to help reduce energy consumption in transport.

José Ballesta explained that "we are talking about taking responsibility involving the commitments made by the European Union through the Covenant of Mayors, to reduce by 20 percent the emissions of greenhouse gases, saving 20 percent of energy consumption through increased energy efficiency, to cover 10 percent of transportation needs through biofuels and promote renewable energy to 20 percent. "

Finally, he recalled that "in this role the municipalities in the Region have our support and collaboration through the Energy Management Agency of the Region of Murcia, which provides technical, financial and legal for municipalities to undertake all measures with guarantees. "

So far there are six municipalities (Puerto Lumbreras, Yecla, Cehegín, La Union, Torre Pacheco and Cartagena) that have signed this protocol for energy reduction in their municipalities, although the intention of the Ministry of Universities, Business and Research to the other municipalities in the region to join this green initiative.
