The mentally handicapped want to have fun with other people (04/10/2011)

A new service will help 400 people with intellectual disabilities and cerebral palsy exist in Cartagena and the surrounding area to participate in leisure activities and free time with the rest of Cartagena.

As explained by Santiago Lopez, ASID Cartagena, the creation of this service has been motivated by the growing demand for people with intellectual disabilities and their families and grabbed Astus Cartagena.

For Lopez this collaboration is unique in Spain and demonstrates the desire to optimize resources and want to go in the same direction.

It has also highlighted that the service will be available to the entire group, whether or not one of the funding organizations: the only requirement for the person with intellectual disabilities and cerebral palsy, will be over 16 years.

For its part, Joaquín Barberá, of Astus, said that the right to enjoy leisure with others is a fundamental right of mentally disabled, including the choice of activities in which you participate and the possibility of new friends and expand your circle of relationships.

Barbera has also requested the cooperation of society and companies from Cartagena to maintain this service, which Asido Astus and permanently dispense a portion of their funds.

Francisco Fernandez, GMP Foundation, which contributed 25,000 euros to the implementation of this initiative, stressed that it is a project with many virtues, and that drive two associations have agreed with a vocation of sustainability education while the remaining values ​​of society, part of his leisure to the intellectually disabled.

David Rivera, head coach of the SOI has explained the operation of the service. This is not to provide a sealed bid but disabled people themselves decide what activities to participate, he explained.

And gave as an example of an intellectual disability want to make a guitar course: The SOI does not hold a guitar course for the disabled but will seek to guitar lessons and try to integrate it with other students, at first lending their support, but then the rest of his classmates will have to take voluntarily, helping where needed.
