Social Care Councillor defends maintenance of social programs in the 2011 budget (25/07/2011)

The councilman of Social Service of the City of Cartagena, Antonio Calderon, said that the 2011 budget and respect for all social assistance programs.

Calderon responds to the council of the United Left who reminds them that the City and to maintain the social assistance has had to cope with cuts in social spending by the Government of Spain that has lowered the funding for programs by 50%.

"We had to cover the budgets of the City programs to help families of situations of exclusion, the development plan for Gypsy and volunteer aid without municipal commitment have disappeared," stated Calderón.

The councilman of Social Care explained that his department has cut current spending items such as furniture (57%), office (56%) to maintain "untouchable" social benefits.

He added that the collaboration of private and Estavesa case has served to reduce expenses such as burial.

"The Department of Social Services maintains all the subsidies and grants to institutions of social action, immigration, drugs and international cooperation.'re Like the urgent need for aid, food services and home help telecare" stressed Antonio Calderon.

"Only in relocation and rental payments in the first two months of 2011 was spent 80,000 euros compared to 226,000 euros for throughout the last year," he added.

Councillor rejects accusations Izquierda Unida social decline and cites as an example the 37% increase in the budget of the Municipal Institute of Social Services in the last legislature.
