Cartagena led the decline in unemployment in the region of Murcia in June (05/07/2011)

The largest reduction occurred in the services sector |

Unemployment fell last month in Cartagena in 590 fewer unemployed people, representing a decrease of 3.11% over the month of May or the best figure recorded in June since 2005, both in absolute as for the last decade.

This reduction is more than half the reduction in unemployment has occurred in the Region of Murcia, which rose to 1,000, with a rate of 0.76%.

This reduction makes the total figures of unemployment in 18 408 people standing, 468 people less than in January, which results in a decrease of 2.4% unemployment in Cartagena so far this year.

Unemployment has fallen in all sectors but the largest reduction occurred in the service sector.

In-year figures (June 2011 to June 2010), unemployment has risen 2.75%, a figure that enhances the national average (+3,50%) and regional (+3,93%).

Diego Ortega, Councillor for Employment, has welcomed these figures, but insists that our economy is weighed down by domestic problems that have not yet been resolved.

The council notes that the largest decrease occurred in the tourism sector, but also pointed out that this reduction was 15% higher than in the previous two years and has said that the summer is not in itself a guarantee of employment, as evidenced by the fact that since 2005 there have been two months of June with increased unemployment.

Diego Ortega believes that these figures demonstrate the dynamism of the service sector in Cartagena and confirm the validity of the city government that has come the development of tourism as the main source of wealth and employment.
