Four Dutch ships in Cartagena monitor the flow of drugs by sea (17/06/2011)

The mayor has this morning received a visit from the Commander of the Dutch fleet participating in Operation Frontex, which has intercepted 400 kilos of hashish, and during the weekend rest in our city

Four Dutch ships with a crew of 140 marine s, have come to Cartagena to enjoy a weekend break from the European operation of Frontex maritime border control.

Its main tasks are focused on combating illegal immigration and drug trafficking by sea.

The Mayor, Pilar Barreiro, received this morning the commander of the Dutch Fleet, the Commander Peter Bergen Henegouwen n AJ, accompanied by the Consul of the Netherlands, H.

Eric Durieux, and the Military Attache of the Embassy of Netherlands in Madrid, Henrie Doreleijers.

The mayor welcomed them to the city, which will be until Monday June 20 at the Quai de la Curra.

The crew will use to rest, since, as pointed Consul of the Netherlands,

Ships Dutch border patrols began in late May for a month and continue working on the Spanish maritime border control to return to Holland in early July.

INTERCEPTED S OF 400 KILOS More HACH S

The first performance with the success of Operation Frontex in our waters occurred yesterday when the ship intercepted a small boat in waters off the coast carrying more than 400 kilos of hashish.

The Frontex operation was launched by the European Border Control to coordinate maritime interception operations on the coast, mainly in the peripheral countries of the European Union, including Spain.

The main current operation is the detection of illegal immigrants crossing the sea and the interception of 'mother ships' and caches of drugs.
