Facing a parent to her daughter's truancy (05/05/2011)

The town of Cartagena has been the second sentence against a parent for their children's truancy.

On April 12, the Criminal Court No 2 of the city issued an order against a partner for the crime of abandonment of the family by denying his daughter's right to education, establishing a penalty of three months in prison .

This sentence has been suspended for two years in which parents can not commit any violation, because if so, the sentence would be effective.

The complaint was filed by the Truancy Service of the Department of Education in February 2009 because after extensive work with the family was not able to regulate the assistance of his daughter to school.

As explained Councilwoman Josefa Maroto, Municipal Service Truancy has been working for the prevention and eradication of truancy in the city of Cartagena from 1991, in the course of this long journey has ensured that many families are aware the importance of education and training for the future of their children, however, this awareness is not achieved with other families so they should refer the case to other instances in this case to the Administration of Justice, since from Municipal Services has made few interventions are possible within the powers attributed to them.

Marone added that there is an awareness in government that education is one of the best tools for the advancement and progress of societies, and in this sense they are addressing the educational policies by joining forces with the goal of generations higher educational levels.

Councillor has expressed his satisfaction that the Administration of Justice has held that the fact motivated by this family is without prejudice to the lowest since the failure to attend your school, denied the possibility of training and education, basic rights already mentioned in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, which states that everyone has the right to education and that education should be compulsory and free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages.
