The cooperation of citizens helps prevent gulls become a pest (06/04/2011)

The councilman of Health has launched a new campaign launches the City Hall from today until June 30 to control the seagull population of the city, insisting, as a novelty, in seeking the participation of schools

Since there are four campaigns Population Control of Gulls in the city that has held the City Council through the Department of Health to prevent this species becoming a pest, and only in the last year have doubled results for the year 2009, thanks largely to the cooperation of citizens, as pointed out by the council of the area, Nicholas Angel Bernal, presentation of the new action, which begins today and ends on June 30 .

During the 2010 campaign there were 102 notices of the existence of gull nests on the part of citizens, inspected 160 points, 90 eggs were rendered unusable and 73 chicks were captured.

A presentation of the campaign also attended by the Head of Health Promotion and Municipal Laboratory, María José Hernández, and the biologist responsible for monitoring the company of birds, Joseph Morales, who have pointed out, within the data obtained, a notices increased presence of gulls in the courtyards of the village primary school, which has caused this season, as a novelty, has requested the cooperation of schools.

In this regard, intensify the removal of food waste in yards after the break, as these residues tend to be used as food by the seagulls, being scavengers, they eat everything they find.

According to Nicholas Angel Bernal, marking the boom of the gulls is the availability of food, hence the need to avoid the presence of remains, both in schools and in dumpsters.

This initiative is to be maintained throughout the year to assess, after that period, if any change in behavior that contributes to the objective pursued, which is to disrupt and disturb the existence of gulls in the city for traveling to their natural habitat, the coastal environment.

To that end, uses a geographic information system that lets you see any trends in bird populations.

Put obstacles in the roofs where nests have been observed in other years.

CATCH IS PIGEON MANTINE

The other bird species, as well as the gull, which is monitored by the council to avoid becoming a pest is the dove, resulting in a total of 3,709 caught in 2010, similar to the previous year , which seized 3,511 copies.

The councilman of Health has announced that this year there will be a new census of the population of pigeons in the city, to update data from the last census, conducted in 2005.
