The CHS invests € 1.6 million to prevent floods in the wadis of the deputation cartageneras Beal (28/03/2011)

The president of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS), Charo Quesada, today opened channeling and environmental conditioning of the wadis of Mendoza and the Matildas in their path by the council of Cartagena del Beal, whose total investment amounts to 1.6 million euros, and that will prevent eroded two separate channels and not lose drainage capacity in case of flood episodes.

The last stretch where he played the CHS includes a length of 842 meters between the Llano del Beal and the N-332, intervening cause of the high experienced by the gully erosion, due to the material that makes up his bed and to provide continuity the step taken by the agency previously basin, located upstream of the road F-43 (Cartagena - Los Nietos).

Thus, the public water is bounded by gabion walls 2 meters in height, composed of blocks that prevent overflow in case of floods, respecting throughout the performance the natural width of the channel, to not impair the drain.

With respect to the bed, given the high drag of material causing the rains, has been placed without mortar rubble, allowing natural percolation of water surface.

A mid-span where he has acted, there was a gabion dam deteriorated and included in a draft hydrological correction, which has been demolished and replaced by a new one with similar dimensions (3 meters high and 18 meters wide) embedding the shoulders on the ground about 3 meters in order to give greater stability.

On the right bank, the CHS has conditioned the easement area, spreading a layer of compacted gravel and planting species native to the area, serving the promenade connecting the towns of Llano del Beal and Beal.

In areas with the possibility of falling, has placed a wooden railing treated, while furniture is placed for the rest of pedestrians.

Matildas

As for the promenade of Las Matildes in the hamlet of Beal, the CHS has invested EUR 212,425.48 packaging, environmental restoration and revegetation of a section of 2 km, extending from the Sierra Minera and empties into the Mar Menor, one of whose troubles is the sediment through the gullies of the Sierra Minera, carrying materials degraded by mining.

One of these channels is the avenue of Matilda, who comes from the Emilia Cantera area, and drag contaminated sediment to its mouth in the Mar Menor.

The purpose of these works is the realization of dikes and ponds in the channel for the deposition of sediments as a trap, to avoid transport to its mouth on the Mar Menor and the refurbishment of the promenade, correcting the course, arranging deformed and protecting slopes with riprap.

You have made the revegetation of strip side of the avenue, and part of the easement area, providing it with both tree and shrub planting to improve visual appearance and provide it with shade areas, setting the ground to lessen the effect of erosion, reduce the drag effect of contaminated materials and sheet floods.

Among the most prominent are the fig, carob, pine, salt cedar, juniper and wild olive arrears, etc.

and native shrub species (palms, lavender, rosemary, myrtle, esparto, etc).

The civil work has involved the refurbishment of the runway, where dams have been built 4 masonry and other repairs, placement of riprap blanket at about 80 meters, adequacy of banks and ponds for sediment accumulation.

More than 6 million euros invested in Cartagena

In total, the Government of Spain has invested, through the Segura basin, 6,088,773.28 euros in the city of Cartagena from 2004, primarily in performances of conditioning and cleaning of gullies.
