The City installed LED lights at zebra crossings to reduce accidents (04/02/2011)

The departments of Infrastructure and Public Safety are joining forces to reduce accidents among pedestrians, curb speeding in the city and improve road safety.

With these objectives have been installed a total of 157 LED lights on more than fifty paces from the city s pedestrians where traffic is more concentrated in the night.

The flashing light emitting, yellow car warns the driver to move with caution and reduce speed. The aim is to provoke a greater visual presence of the pedestrian crossing to the tube r, explained Councillor for Citizen Security, Javier Smith, who also noted that not only carry out the installation of the LEDs, but the marking of pedestrian crossings with pictograms and, above all, the closest to the schools.

In 2010 the City of Cartagena made an investment of about EUR 250,000 in maintenance and signage d and circulation devices on roads throughout the municipality, the council reported.

Javier Herrero has insisted that these measures will help reduce the road accident rate in Cartagena has dropped 20% since 2008.

SOLAR POWERED MINI

These light systems, 10 centimeters in diameter, are equipped with a mini solar panels that are active at night and when there is lack of light by adverse weather conditions.

During the day, the solar power system is recharged by lithium batteries to optimize your life.

The LEDs, which can support the weight of heavy vehicles up to 40,000 pounds, are distributed in the lane, two at each end and one in the middle, so that drivers at night to identify the location of the zebra crossing.

This new technology concerned about public safety is already used in many parts of Spain like Madrid and Asturias, on urban roads with heavy traffic at night.

Where pedestrian crossings are installed LED lights are located in the Ramón y Cajal Street (from Queen Victoria to Alfonso XIII), Avenida de Murcia (front facing Zenith and Cajamurcia) Guimbarda Wssel street, Calle Pintor Portela, Carretera de La Algameca and Calle Real, in Cartagena.
