Cartagena Puerto de Culturas celebrates its tenth anniversary, turning the past into the future (28/01/2011)

The Director General of Tourism, Marina Garcia, presented today, along with the mayor of Cartagena, Pilar Barreiro, the activities to be carried out in the port city under the theme 'Making our past into the future', to mark the tenth anniversary Cartagena Puerto de Culturas.

The first season of activities will take place from 18 February to 18 March.

So from February to November will launch a series of activities and events designed to honor each period in the history of Cartagena, through interpretation facilities, sites and museums that are part of the current offer and dedicate a period specific time each of them, with a diverse schedule of activities aimed at different audiences.

Between February and April will honor the Punic and Roman world, then allocate space to the medieval times and the Cartagena Cartagena Modern Defense, where cultural activities, recreational and boosting tourism.

Among the planned actions will meet with the authors of each space to discuss the process of creation, photo exhibitions on the recovery process of each, relevant talks from writers in the world of historical fiction, with works based on the time honored at all times.

Aimed at children and families will have workshops and dramatized in each of the spaces and at different times.

One of these activities, which will start the first season in the Punic Wall, will be the 'Clicks stories "(story of a click of Playmobil), where these small characters recreate the history of Cartagena, from the Carthaginians to the contemporary period.

Also be called the V photo contest and held several open houses each season.

Garcia stressed that "over the years has developed an action plan, involving the recovery of heritage resources, infrastructure, signage, access and tourist transportation, via actions archaeological, architectural and museum that has led to a city's tourism product. "

He added that "with all investments, what we are doing is positioning the tourist image of Cartagena at the international level."

The Director General of Tourism said that "our intention is that 2011 is a special year in which Cartagena keep doing all the activities over the years have been conducted, but strengthened and emphasis on each of the seasons year in certain schools to go recreating the history of the city. "

For Garcia, "This is an effort that deserves to be recognized by all, as Cartagena and cultural products have become a benchmark tourist region."

The actions have materialized in the enhancement of the heritage that today can be enjoyed in the city, through which you can take a tour through history from the Punic period, with the remains of Wall and Center interpretation, to the Roman world through the Casa de la Fortuna, Augusteum Decumano and soon to be added to the recovery of the Roman Quarter Pinwheel.

Another of the actions undertaken is the panoramic lift that provides access to Torres and Castillo de la Concepción showing visitors the historical evolution of the medieval city.

Also Refuge Museum of Civil War has been another important investment and the recovery of the street entrances to the Pavilion Autopsy Gisbert.

In short, the recovery of eight museum spaces, access, signage and two tourist transportation and management tools used have boosted the tourism sector in Cartagena, with tourist figures upward trend over the years, from 30,000 visitors in 2003, which set in motion the first proceedings, to 345,000 visitors in 2010.

This has meant that two million people have enjoyed this cultural legacy, where the visitor is the main protagonist.
