Seven traffic lights for cyclists to encourage the use of alternative transport (21/01/2011)

Cartagena City Council has stepped up its commitment to promoting cycling in the municipality with the installation of seven traffic lights that include a specific signal for cyclists.

This new service is part of the initiative to put the infrastructure in the city for the use of bicycles as alternative transportation.

The Department of Infrastructure, at the request of the Municipal Office of the bicycle, has installed since last December showing a number of LED lights for pedestrians and bicycles.

These lights are located in different parts of the city within the network of bicycle lanes.

Specifically, the lights are on the street to Angel Bruna (in the extension of Avenida Ciudad de Murcia), at Calle Jorge Juan (at intersections with streets Carmen Conde, Juan à ngel Fernández and Bruna), in the Avenue Murcia (at crossings with Round à ngel Ferrol and Bruna) and the Cuesta del Batel (at the intersection of Calle Gisbert and Alfonso XII).

CARTAGENA AND HAVE AS 35 KM Cycling Master VA

The service of traffic lights for cyclists joined the project of building the bike lane network developed by the city of Cartagena for the benefit of the environment and promoting healthy lifestyles for citizens.

Building works for the refurbishment of roads and streets of the city, the council's Infrastructure launched the project involves the construction of 42.11 kilometers of roads upgraded for cyclists, of which 35 are already fully completed, 22 km.

The completion of the work is carried out in tranches, of which already operates two rings: one that runs through the center (Plaza Bastarreche, Batel-Cuesta del Puerto, Plaza Héroes de Cavite, Real Street and Luis grille) and a second ring in the Eixample area which includes the sections: Round Union City (From Rotonda Severo Ochoa to C / Sparta), à ngel Bruna (from Queen Victoria to Rotonda Severo Ochoa), Jorge Juan (From Rotonda up Severo Ochoa roundabout), Avenida de Murcia (From Union City Round Up à ngel Bruna), Sebastian Feringa (From C / Alfonso VI to Centro Comercial Eroski) and Juan Fernandez.

The network also includes bike lanes Tentegorra, Portman, Los Urrutias, La Manga, Cabo de Palos, the access road to the IES El Bohio and Feringa Sebastian Avenue (roundabout section of St. Vincent de Paul-Rambla de Benipila).

Also, running is the stretch of Calle Ramon y Cajal designed as a two-way lane with up and down, and the Via Verde de Barrio Peral (as shared pool).

FIRST CYCLE LANE ON A JOHN FERN DEZ Contramano

Cartagena also binds to other Spanish and European cities such as Vitoria and Madrid, to be a pioneer in the placement of a bike lane in the opposite, ie opposite to the movement of cars.

The street bike lane Juan Fernandez, 927 meters, is the first network to adapt in this way, as a pilot and due to requests of the Association Free Way.

The advantage of being in the opposite lies in the possibility of cyclists to move in two directions: in the direction of the cars on the rails of these, and in contradirección, the bike lane.

It is a measure being implemented successfully in other Spanish and European cities in order to facilitate greater mobility of bicycles over cars.

THE DISTRICT WILL GREEN PEAR LIST FOR FEBRUARY

Cyclists and pedestrians share the Greenway Barrio Peral, a space for walking bridge linking the Mandarache The Barreros whose works will be completely finished by next February.

The Greenway has been finished with the installation of about 600 trees, lighting, street furniture and the placement of a special floor that will form a central walkway up to 6 meters wide.

The Greenway takes the old route of the railway and has a length of over 1.7 kilometers and an area of over 32,000 square meters.

In areas of flare, near the old station located in the Plaza de Canthal, it will have a playground and outdoor fitness circuit also called Biosalud.

Also in the wider beds with pine forest areas will be placed picnic tables.
