New paleontological excavations at Cueva Victoria (07/07/2010)

During this month of July will be held in Victoria Cave new excavations, directed by Luis Carlos Giber and Feránez, and driven by the city of Cartagena and the Sierra Minera tourist consortium, whose horizon visits this important paleontological sites, one of the most important European

Victoria Cave is a large reservoir located on the eastern slope of Cerro de San Ginés de la Jara and where it has found many fossils, human remains and animal species never before studied: up to 60 fossil vertebrates, including human remains (a phalanx human whole - probably one of the oldest human remains identified in Europe and two pieces of humerus), African fauna was first described in Europe, new species never described and exotic birds such as swans or woodpeckers, more typical of other latitudes.

Within the Tourist Consortium of the Sierra Minera, the City of Cartagena want to incorporate the Cueva Victoria as a tourist resource of the District of Cartagena and visited when researchers do what they wish.

To this end the City has acquired 19,000 square meters of the Cave (3,500 m natural galleries and mining) and infrastructure has provided researchers with an investment by the tourism consortium of 600,000 euros.

La Cueva Victoria is being excavated for 25 years, first by Dr. Joseph Gilbert and later by his son Louis, who has taken over the investigation.

The data collected indicate that it was a den of hyenas, which were responsible for collecting carrion of all kinds in the environment into the cave to feed the hatchlings, which explains the high diversity of species fossils, fossils that are being cataloged and transferred to the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Cartagena de Castro Enrique Escudero.

Already in the previous campaign built a scaffold, with which it opened a new stage in the excavations of the Victoria Cave, allowing in-situ study the material, which will help you understand the process of accumulation of fossils over time.

As for the mining interest, Cueva Victoria was also an important source of manganese and have also found traces of other metals such as gold.

The mining activity in the early twentieth century, has eliminated 90% of the existing fossil material.
