Much More May becomes the first ecofestival of Cartagena (25/04/2018)

The Festival of Emerging Art Much More May returns to Cartagena in its 9th edition, which will be held from May 10 to June 3.

Under the slogan "Interdependent, eco-dependent" the festival is working to be the first reference ecofestival of the municipality.

The presentation of the poster and training program took place this morning, Wednesday, April 25, and was given by the mayor of Culture, Education and Youth, David Martínez;

of the president of the New Culture for the Climate Association, Antonio Soler and by the artist and collaborator of the festival, Lola Nieto.

The poster, which refers to the motto chosen for this edition, is the work of the designer Nacho Muñoz Cano.

It shows the relationship between artistic creativity and environmental sustainability.

As highlighted by the Councilor for Culture "It is an issue of the utmost importance for our societies: how art can serve to deepen knowledge and anticipate possible solutions to the very serious problems created by human beings."

In this ninth edition, the third since the recovery of the festival by the local government, the main axis of the festival will be sustainability, therefore, in the previous edition a data collection was undertaken to evaluate the environmental impact of the festival and reduce its impact this time with compensating measures.

After the evaluation of these data, the unsustainability that currently exists in the environment is evident.

In the city of Cartagena a total of 115,000,000 Kilográmos of garbage were dumped during the year 2017, which means a total of 535 kg per inhabitant per year.

These data give an idea of the inflection point in which the environment is currently.

For his part, the president of the New Culture for Climate Association, Antonio Soler has given an account of the valuation of the data extracted in the previous edition, in 2017. The carbon footprint left by the festival amounted to 6 tons of dioxide carbon, with transport being the element that most affected the carbon emission for the festival as a whole.

With these data analyzed is intended to "draw lessons to make a more sustainable festival in this and other future editions, for which they have to be involved both organizers and participants," said Antonio Soler.

On this occasion everything is ready for the collection of absolute data and carbon footprint activities that will leave the festival, which is expected to be smaller than in the previous edition and to be reduced as the editions advance.

The artist and collaborator of the Lola Nieto Festival, has detailed the details of the Formative Laboratory, which will be part of the Much More May of 2018. "It is called a laboratory because there is experimentation and critical learning so that the user is easier to access the information, which is sometimes coded, of art ".

The public will be an active agent and will participate in the workshops and talks they attend.

Among all the activities programmed within the framework of the Training Laboratory, the 'Message in the disposable bottle' Workshop will be held by ANSE together with the artistic collective Basurama.

The participants will go out by boat to collect garbage from the sea, which will then be resigned to give it a critical and artistic sense.

Another action of the laboratory is in charge of the art historian and independent curator Blanca de la Torre who will address the meeting spaces between art and ecology to promote debate and reflection on the ecological problems of the present moment.

In the same way, in the workshop given by Salvi Vivancos, the audiovisual creator and art historian, will present his work of historical archive consisting of a simple geolocation application that allows to identify and monitor the festival's works.

The contemporary dance proposals come hand in hand with the National Dance Award, the company La intrusa, in which the body takes center stage as a means of expression and criticism.

The research group of the University of Murcia brings the workshop 'Reset: Mar Menor.

Imaginary laboratory for a landscape in crisis', which proposes a trip to explore the Mar Menor and show the capitalocene in which we live and from which will also leave a collaborative mapping workshop on the Mar Menor, both proposals from an artistic and scientific perspective .

The wide range of workshops, courses and activities are led by national artists who will bring art and ecological awareness to the municipality of Cartagena.
