The student of the first promotion of the Master in Naval and Oceanic Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) Natalia García Esquiva has finished her studies with a work in which she proposes installations based on renewable sources, wind turbines and photovoltaic systems, in the vicinity of the Escombreras dock to provide power to the ships while they are docked in port.

The TFM, led by Jerónimo Esteve Pérez and José Enrique Gutiérrez Romero, concludes, after studying the energy needs of the ships that have arrived at the port of Cartagena during the last 7 years, that the combined installation of eleven wind turbines and a photovoltaic plant could be capable of supplying 14,600 kilowatts of power, eliminating 10,500 annual tons of CO2 emitted by auxiliary engines of ships while they remain docked in the Port of Cartagena.

"It's an amount equivalent to carbon dioxide generated by 6,100 cars a year," exemplifies the already naval engineer.

The environmental benefits in air quality, underwater noise and marine pollution that would be achieved by avoiding the use of engines with the proposal of their work have earned the student the award for the best Master's Thesis awarded by the Interuniversity Chair of Environment Port Authority of Cartagena - Campus Mare Nostrum, to which students from the UPCT and the University of Murcia could present themselves.

Natalia García Esquiva, neighbor of the municipality of Bigastro (Alicante), works since the master's degree in the Quality department of Navantia in Cartagena.

The work is entitled 'Study and sizing of an installation of electricity supply to ships from land based on Onshore Power Supply technology' and is published (http://repositorio.upct.es/handle/10317/6097) in the Academic Repository of the UPCT.
