MC urges local and regional governments to promote the decontamination of El Hondón land (03/04/2018)

Francisco Calderón recalls that this is a public health problem and, in 2018, the Socialists have stopped the studies and the people have parked the exemption of the waste fees

In October 2017, the conclusions of the work on 'Characterization, diagnosis and risk analysis of soils, rafts and stockpiles in the El Hondón plot' were announced.

The study was commissioned by José López as mayor of Cartagena to the research group on soil management, utilization and recovery of the UPCT.

The councilman of MC, Francisco Calderón, recalled that, from his past responsibilities in the area of Quality of Life, "we approved a Chair of Environment with the UPCT, specializing in soil regeneration, to give continuity to the studies prior to the forced and necessary decontamination project of this area ".

Calderón has stressed that "up to now the momentum has come in. Now it does not appear that Castejón and his people have been able to process the initial payment of the Chair so that the decontamination of El Hondón can be achieved. that there will not be a photo of this legislature, without appreciating that what they should do is work, in this case, for the health of the neighbors, something secondary for them and essential for us ".

The mayor of Cartagena has highlighted the "inaction of the regional government," noting that, a few days ago, the newspaper La Verdad published that the Ministry of Finance of the CARM had parked the application of the exemption from fees for these jobs.

Therefore, Francisco Calderón has announced that MC will take a motion to the next municipal plenary session to urge the regional government to make a legislative amendment such as the one made in 2010 to facilitate the recovery of the Portman Bay, to exempt from the fee these necessary work and activate an issue that CARM cares very little, even if it was caused by the PP. "

It should be remembered that Law 9/2005 contains an authorization that allows, through the General Budgets Law, to modify the amounts of tax liens for deposit or storage of waste.

And that, between the assumptions of no subjection or exemption, the situation of El Hondón does not appear.

Calderón has affirmed that "neither the neighbors of the Sector Station, Los Mateos, San Ginés or Torreciega nor we, can understand that, after decades of abandonment and exposure to the risks produced by the contaminated lands, the local and regional governments stop the decontamination of the Hondón, they are irresponsible and that is why we will take this matter to the Plenary. "

In the Hondón case, the waste responds to historical production processes accumulated over decades, the plant being dismantled in 2000, and being technically impossible, unless some novel formula is found, the recovery and reuse of the waste to avoid that they end up being eliminated by landfilling.

The MC councilor concluded by stating that "the application of this rate would be an unbearable penalty to advance the project, generating an extra cost of millions of euros that compromises the viability of the recovery of the area and, with it, our health."
