Cartagena, a pioneer in the celebration of the International Day of the Gypsy People (02/04/2018)

Cartagena will express its involvement and commitment with the Gypsy People during the celebration of its International Day with a series of activities that will take place throughout this week and will have its peak on Sunday, April 8, with the raising of the Roma flag in the Town Hall Square.

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, presented on Monday, April 2, all the activities that will be carried out in the city for the World Day of the Gypsy People.

Joining her were Juan García Santiago, regional delegate of the Federation of Roma Associations FAGA;

and Adelaida Martín Carreño, coordinator of the Rascasa Association.

Castejón, pointed out that from the Consistory wanted to recover this important date, which commemorate, celebrate and, above all, make visible the traditions and culture of this people as a means to continue moving towards coexistence and understanding of all.

Thus, the main objective of the activities and scheduled events is "to dignify the position of the Gypsy People in the world, and in this case in Cartagena", pointed out the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón.

For his part, Juan García, regional delegate of the Federation of Gypsy Associations FAGA, thanked the City of Cartagena for its great involvement and pioneering character in the celebration of this important day for the Gypsy People.

In addition, Garcia has pointed out the importance of raising a flag for many unknown as is his people in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Cartagena.

Adelaida Martín, coordinator of the Rascasa Association, has encouraged all the Cartageneros to make these activities visible and with them the Gypsy People.

ACTIVITIES

From April 5 to 8, activities will take place in different neighborhoods of the city,

The first scheduled activity, which will take place in the Local Social Lo Campano, is a neighborhood coexistence in which, among other activities, a colloquium will be given under the name "Talk of the gypsy woman: work and personal experiences".

Simultaneously, in the Mediterranean - Vincentian Urbanization, a Workshop on the History of the Gypsy People is planned.

On April 6, at the Bda Neighborhood Association.

Villalba, will take place the decoration of trees with the gypsy flag and allusive messages.

In the same way, in Los Mateos at 5:00 a conviviality will take place.

In the Historical Center - Center of Caritas San Diego a workshop on History of the Gypsy People will be given and the center will be decorated with green and blue ribbons.

On April 8, International Day of the Gypsy People, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

the activities will take place in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

The mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, will make a greeting after which the raising of the Gypsy flag with the anthem "Gelem, Gelem" will proceed.

After, the reading of the Gypsy Manifesto and the delivery of Commemorative Plates will be carried out.

In addition, you can enjoy plays, dance and musical performances that will be carried out by various groups such as the Evangelical Refuge Cities, Cultural and Sports Association Lo Campano, among others.

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, has also stated that already in her work as deputy mayor she acquired this commitment with the Gypsy People and after assuming the mayor's office she began to work to celebrate this day as the Gitano deserves.
