The mayor asks for all Cartagena in the Ounce of Gold (23/03/2018)

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, this morning has fulfilled the tradition of the Ounce of Gold, dating from 1762, an ounce that symbolizes the contribution given annually by the City of Cartagena to the Holy and Royal Hospital of Charity to help the poor sick, which has amounted to 35,000 euros.

The original ounce next to the check has been deposited by Ana Belén Castejón before the main altar of the Basilica of Charity on the Great Day of the Patron, during the offertory of the Mass that has officiated the Bishop of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes.

About eleven and ten o'clock in the morning the Municipal Corporation departed from the City Hall in a gala retinue towards Charity.

There the mayor has made the offering in which he has knelt before the Patron, where he has asked for neighbors without work, for the sick, victims of gender violence, people at risk of exclusion, by farmers and for those who they arrive at our coasts fleeing "from misery and fear".

The mayor's offering was as follows:

Sovereign lady and our mother.

The deaf drum of Cristo del Socorro has broken this morning at dawn announcing to all of Spain that Holy Week begins in Cartagena, your Cartagena.

How could it be otherwise, a procession has been responsible for waking up on your Big Day, to sing the first Salve of the many that we will sing today in your honor.

Postrada before you, representing our beloved municipality, I can not help remembering many Cartagena.

I remember the day María José called us because her partner had beaten her and locked her in her house, threatening to return to kill her.

It was a painful and very sad day for me, in which I passed real fear until they confirmed that I was fine and that their partner was arrested.

Dear Mother, abuse is still present in our society.

Help us to continue fighting and to receive the support and the means we need to end the sexist scourge.

I remember Paco.

He is more than fifty years old.

At forty-five he was unemployed and has not been able to access any decent job, although he has tried hard.

Although we have improved somewhat in recent years, there are still too many who have less to face their day to day.

Intercede for all of them and give us strength to continue supporting them.

I can not forget Clara, a little girl with Down Syndrome who keeps a titanic struggle in her school because, due to her young age, she does not understand the meaning of full inclusion, but she knows that she wants to study in the same school as her siblings and you have the right to do so.

In my head I am very present to our farmers.

Madam, help them to get the water that we need so much, but also guide us so that together we can find solutions that do not depend on heaven.

I do not want to forget Juanjo, a young man with leukemia, who continues to face the disease and who will conquer this war without quarter because he has the tenacity and the heart to achieve it.

Remember the sick Cartagena and intercede for their improvement.

I also remember a young Algerian woman who arrived at our port on a cold November night in a boat.

I was pregnant, frozen and scared.

Because of her situation, she stayed in our land, but the father of her son was expelled, leaving her alone in a strange country.

Mother, there are many who flee from wars, misery and fear, seeking a better life.

Help them to face this painful situation.

You see, Madam, your people still need you as much as ever, because, for many centuries that pass, you are still the mother to whom we entrust our sorrows and with whom we share our dreams and illusions.

That's why today I prostrate myself before you, to ask for your help and consolation.

At a time when we are obliged to understand each other for the good of our society, help us find the solidarity needed to be loyal and consistent.

To look for common interest and not our own.

To understand that only by working together can we contribute to the development of our municipality.

Do not let us forget that we represent thousands of Cartagena who deserve respect and coherence on our part.

Guide us and help us as only you know how to do it.

FIRST PROCESSION OF SPAIN

The Ounce of Gold Offering has been one of the events that mark the Great Day of Cartagena, in which the processions begin and the honors are paid to the Patroness, the Virgin of Charity.

Thus, at midnight, the usual night serenade a la Caridad took place, in which the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, took part, and at dawn, from the outskirts of the Old Cathedral, the first procession of Spain began: the penitential Via Crucis of the Christ of the Socorro that after crossing the main streets and alleys of the Historical Helmet, has been gathered with the first lights of the dawn.

This afternoon the popular floral offering will be held by the residents of Cartagena, its neighborhoods and councils, who will lay bouquets and dance and sing before the image of the Virgin.

Also in the afternoon the Way of the Cross of the Christ of Divine Mercy will depart from the Plaza del Lago and later, at night, the first procession will leave California from the Church of Santa Maria, the Christ of Mercy and the Virgin of the Rosary .

Also the deputation of Alumbres will process tonight to the Virgin of Charity.
