The Community restores three images of Cartagena's Holy Week (12/03/2018)

The Community has restored three images of Easter Cartagena that today have given to the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus Nazareno (Marrajos) and the Pontifical, Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus in the Painful Step of Prendimiento and Hope of the Salvation of the Souls (Californios) the counselors of Tourism, Culture and the Environment, Javier Celdrán, and of Transparency, Participation and Spokesperson, Noelia Arroyo.

These are the carvings of San Juan (Marrajos) and Samaritana and the Angel of Passion (Californios), which have been treated during the last months in the Restoration Center of the Region and now, before they process through the streets of Cartagena, will remain exposed for several days in the courtyard of Palacio Aguirre, so that those who live and visit the port city can admire these pieces up close.

The works presented different and varied pathologies that have resulted in three completely different intervention processes, with enormous complexity and "that demonstrate once again the experience and quality of the technicians of the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia", considered a reference also for its modern equipment.

The San Juan de la Cofradía Marraja is a 'dress' sculpture made of carved and polychrome wood by José Capuz in 1943. The reason for the restoration was the appearance of a greenish hue on the face of the image.

The studies carried out indicated that there was no problem in the original polychromy and that this tone was due to a partial color retouching that was covering, as a makeup, a large part of the face and that altered the primitive color.

At the same time, the study also revealed the presence of different damages that had to be treated, such as the presence of a generalized dirt layer, loss of pictorial film on the hands, feet and head, scratches or small lack of support on the base.

All this led to a complete restoration process that consisted in the physical-chemical cleaning of the surface, the replacement of the lost support faults, the patching of holes in the enlienzado, the reconstruction of the preparation layer, the chromatic reintegration differentiated from the lack of color and the application of a final varnish.

In this way, the work has been recovered in which we can appreciate the meticulous polychrome finish with which Capuz finished the fingernails.

The Samaritan, sculpture 'dress' in polychrome wood of the Cofradia California, was made by José Sánchez Lozano in 1945. At the end of the processional parade last year, the image suffered an accident (fell from the throne and suffered serious damage as the fracture of multiple parts, such as hands, fingers and head), and many other areas of the polychrome surface were affected by small friction and bumps.

From Culture a complex restoration process has been carried out to fit each element and made new fixings.

Subsequently, each of the small bumps or abrasions was treated, the preparation layer was reconstructed, a different chromatic reintegration was carried out and a final protective varnish was applied.

Lastly, the size of the Angel of the Passion of the Californios has also been restored;

a sculpture made with mixed technique (wood, plaster and glued fabrics) by José Sánchez Lozano in 1966 and which is characterized as a very delicate work, since its entire mantle is made with the enlienzado technique (glued and placed on the sculpture ).

Precisely the delicacy of the fabrics resulted in damages that were restored by a sculptor who, to reinforce the enlienzado, applied a complete repolicromía, with plaster layer included, especially the blue mantle, which complicated the cleaning.

The work also suffered other unfortunate interventions, such as the arrangement of the right forearm and the application of a slightly oxidized varnish that killed and darkened each and every one of the colors.

All this, together with small blows, abrasions and lack of layers, have required a complete restoration process that began with a physical-chemical cleaning to subsequently rebuild the areas of preparation layer, carry out a differentiated chromatic reintegration and Apply the protective varnish.
