Ricardo Segado will demand the municipal government to replace the statue of Isidoro Máiquez in the center of Plaza San Francisco (08/03/2018)

MC will present this initiative in the Plenary and will urge the image of the illustrious Cartagena actor to return to his previous location, from which he was retired by the PP, taking advantage of the 250th anniversary of his birth

The municipal group MC Cartagena will present a motion at the next plenary session to demand that the local government restore the statue of the actor Isidoro Máiquez in the center of Plaza San Francisco

The initiative will be presented by the head of Culture and Heritage MC, Ricardo Segado, who has argued that "it is one of the most illustrious Cartagena," while he recalled that only two Spanish cities, Cartagena (where he was born) and Granada (where he died), "knew how to dignify his figure with two separate monuments in a prominent place in his historic quarters".

In this regard, the mayor has ensured that, taking advantage of the fact that 2018 marks the 250th anniversary of his birth, "it seems an appropriate time to perform tributes through activities and acts, so that it never falls into oblivion."

Site modified by PP

On the other hand, Segado recalled that the PP was in charge of changing the location of the sculpture during the reform of the square in 2013, "thus relegating the figure of Máiquez to one of the sides, subtracting prominence and sometimes preventing its visualization, since it is hidden behind tarpaulins and scenarios ".

In this regard, the councilor of MC has assessed that "we consider that it is not the appropriate place for the image of Isidoro Máiquez".

Acts in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of his birth

Ricardo Segado stressed that "we are facing an opportunity coinciding with the acts that can be scheduled by the City Council so that Máiquez can return to where it belongs".

Also, has indicated that the Department of Culture announced a recreation of the inauguration of the monument, which took place on May 2, 1927.

Work designed to place it in the center of the square

Castellón sculptor José Ortells was commissioned to give shape to the sculpture, being cast in the Madrid workshops of Mir and Ferrero.

Both the base and the sculpture itself are part of a group that was conceived aesthetically to place it in the center of the square, which had been designed and landscaped according to a plan made by the architect Carlos Mancha in 1884.

The layout is of a first walk between the green massifs of the outside and the central ones, and other two roads or walks that start from the four lateral entrances.

These central cross-shaped walks, surrounded by a second row of hedges, give rise to a circular plaza, the central and most prominent place in the whole square, and significantly any element placed there would preside over the whole.
