Improvement in Cartagena's air quality control stations (09/02/2018)

The air quality control stations, existing in the municipality of Cartagena, will be improved, with the Aljorra, Alumbres, Valle de Escombreras, and the Mompeán Plaza.

These decisions have been taken at the meeting of the Monitoring Committee of the Plan for Improvement of Air Quality in the Region of Murcia that was held today at the headquarters of the Ministry in Murcia and attended by the Councilor of the Area of Quality of Life and Wellbeing of the City Council of Cartagena, Obdulia Gómez.

In this meeting, the improvements that are going to be carried out in the existing air quality control stations in the municipality of Cartagena have been presented.

Thus, in La Aljorra it is planned to install a BTX analyzer (benzene-toluene-xylene), replace the cabin in which the equipment is installed and place a meteorological tower;

in Alumbres, the existing SO2 analyzer will be replaced by a new one;

in the Escombreras Valley, it is planned to place an ozone analyzer and replace the existing one for nitrogen oxides;

and in the Mompean Plaza, the existing SO2 analyzer will be replaced and a PM2.5 particle collector will be placed for the determination of benzo (a) pyrene.

In addition, the 'Framework protocol for municipal action in environmental pollution episodes of NO2 and PM10' has been presented, mainly aimed at episodic situations of pollution caused by road traffic, which will be approved in the coming days, as well as the ' Protocol for Benzene, Toluene and Xylene in sensitive areas, which will be applied by the General Directorate to control the emissions of said pollutants.

Other work that will be carried out in this area is the study of the suitability of the locations of the air quality control stations, a campaign of heavy metal measurements in the Llano del Beal, a study on the contribution of the road traffic to air pollution in cities, and another study aimed at analyzing the contribution of emissions associated with cruise traffic in air quality in Cartagena.

The study of the levels of BPA inmission that will be carried out in La Aljorra, which will start next Monday, February 12, with the installation of a sampling equipment, in the Health Center, has also been discussed. of Pozo Estrecho, to determine the background level of said pollutant in the atmosphere.
