Mendelssohn, Bottesini and Beethoven, protagonists of the V Extraordinary Concerto of Between Strings and Metals (09/02/2018)

The Contest Between Strings and Metals replenishes Cartagena of classical music performed by young artists in its XXI edition.

The auditorium El Batel will host on March 1 at 8 pm the V Extraordinary Concert, which will serve as the kick-off to the event and will regain the presence of former winners who have consolidated and reaped numerous successes in their musical careers.

The presentation of the Contest was carried out today, Friday, February 9, by the Councilor for the area of ​​Youth, Education and Culture, David Martínez;

the Director of the Symphony Orchestra of Cartagena, Leonardo Martínez;

the representative of the Chamber Orchestra of Cartagena, Pedro Martínez;

and the Head of Academic Extension of the Conservatory of Music of Cartagena, Celia Amaro.

Martinez explained that the concert will feature solo performances by the brothers from Cartagena Emilio and Álvaro Yepes, two young bassists trained at the Conservatory of Cartagena and now have an important musical career in Europe.

For his part, the director of the Symphony Orchestra of Cartagena has advanced that the concert will be performed the Overture "The Hebrides" OP.26 by Mendelssohn, "classic and romantic soul", "Passion love" for two double bass Bottesini and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, which will end with a great allegro that will not leave the audience indifferent.

The representative of the musicians of the Chamber Orchestra of Cartagena has reported that the prices of tickets are 5 and 8 euros, "with the aim of bringing music to everyone," and that can be purchased at the box office from El Batel Auditorium or at www.ticketmaster.com.

He also noted that this event, organized by the Youth Department of the City of Cartagena and the Conservatory of Music of Cartagena, "has served as an instrument for the promotion of classical music among the youngest, resulting in the emergence of numerous projects initiated in recent years as a result of the launch of the contest ".

Participation of the Social Services and Education area

Martínez added that they also have the support of the Department of Social Services, which through the Municipal Volunteer Service and the Unit for Older Persons and Persons with Disabilities, has distributed 52 free tickets to groups in Cartagena who requested it.

The area of ​​Education has also collaborated with an open day so that next February 28 schools from 3rd to 6th grade can attend one of the pre-concert trials and meet the musicians of the orchestra, its director and the soloists

The auditions, the closing concert and a tribute to Debussy

For her part, Celia Amaro explained that the Extraordinary Concert is the beginning of many performances that are part of the program of the Strings and Metals Contest, since two weeks later the auditions will begin.

The auditions will be held at the Conservatory of Music and the admission is free until there is full capacity, so Amaro has invited all citizens to attend and enjoy the music.

The closing concert will take place on May 4 at 8 pm at the Batel Auditorium with free admission until full capacity is reached.

There the jury's decision will be announced in all the modalities of the contest.

Attendees will enjoy the performance of the Chamber Orchestra of Cartagena, and the soloists Ángel Rodríguez (marimba) and Mª Carmen Portela (soprano), both winners of the last edition of between strings and brass.

You can also listen to the interpretation of works of the repertoire of the honored composers of the contest between strings and metals: Granados of last year and Debussy this year, pianists Víctor Amaya (I prize of the last edition) and Cristina Sánchez (I award of the XV edition in the year 2012);

and the special participation of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Cartagena.

The Symphony Orchestra of the Conservatory of Music of Cartagena, will put the finishing touch to this Closing Act.

Finally, "Entre Cuerdas y Metales" will perform a concert to pay homage to the French composer Claude Debussy, since this year celebrations are celebrated for the 100 years of his death, during the Night of the Museums on May 19.

In this special concert three winners of the contest Between Strings and Metals Óscar Requena Toulouse (III edition 1999), Andrea Zamora Gumbao (XIV 2011 edition) and Arturo Abellán Sánchez (19th edition 2016) will participate.

Finally, the mayor has reported that during its 21 years of life, this contest has contributed successfully "to the discovery of young talents of music, who develop, today, an important musical career inside and outside our country" .
