The Popular University visits the Iberoamerican God exhibition in Diaz Burgos in Madrid (05/02/2018)

This weekend the students of the Popular University of Cartagena have visited in Madrid the exhibition of Cartagena photographer of recognized international prestige Juan Manuel Díaz Burgos, guided tour by the author, accompanied by the director of the Department of Culture, Fulgencia Plazas, and the director of the Popular University, José Macián.

This exhibition entitled 'Iberoamerican God' is a documentary record of Latin American culture and is exhibited in the Channel Room of Isabel II.

Of the 150 images, exhibited on the three floors, most are unpublished for the public and are characterized by a modulation of their shadows that contributes to the feeling of being faced with a magical realism transferred to the visual.

Neither affirm, deny, or extol beliefs: they represent the ethereal (emotions, hopes) through children's faces and old, naive or crazed, those of models to whom Diaz Burgos has previously approached from respect and empathy.

Díaz Burgos did not want to offer us explanations but questions about these matters, because we could not conceive otherwise these pictures of the visible and the invisible, of a religiosity that both in Spain and in Latin America has a double public and private side and also, traditionally, a marked theatricality in its external manifestations: we handle aesthetic attitudes and not only sentimental before the faith and before death.

This exhibition is curated by the Spanish photographer and journalist, Chema Conesa, great connoisseur of the work of the Cartagena photographer.

The director of the Popular University has expressed his congratulations to the author for the magnitude and depth of the exhibition, which ultimately includes innumerable connections between faith from near and far, but also the fruits of syncretism: the traces of cultures indigenous peoples and of globalization in the religious rites of Latin America.

The Popular University is committed to these cultural initiatives that link with the offer of training in photography taught in courses by Fructuoso Navarro, photographer and teacher with a broad international background, who are getting a great success among the students.
