The City Council proposes to the UPCT to join the Smart City Office (31/01/2018)

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, met this morning with the rector of the Polytechnic University (UPCT), Alejandro Díaz, to propose that this institution participate actively in the project to turn Cartagena into an Intelligent City.

Castejón has taken the opportunity to sign in the Book of Honors of the educational institution, which has highlighted its commitment to the UPCT.

"We want the Polytechnic University to be part of our Smart City Office, which we approve at the end of 2017 and which reports directly to the mayor's office.

This government team has made a great commitment to continue progressing on the road to Smart City, whose main objective is to contribute to improving mobility and accessibility, and we think that we can not count on a better travel companion in this exciting proposal than the Polytechnic University, "said the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón.

Within the structure that is being considered for the start-up of the Smart City Office, a Social Council and a Technical Commission will be created.

"We want the Council to have representatives from the City Council, the Polytechnic University, the Telecommunications and Public Works engineering colleges, as well as the opposition and employer groups," said Castejón.

The Technical Committee will be made up of staff from the City Council and the UPCT and will be responsible for specifying, coordinating and monitoring the objectives of this institutional collaboration.

The mayor has reiterated the importance of the creation of this new office as it will also play a primary role for the municipality as is the raising of European funds.

The budget draft is already finished

"But to achieve this we must have the responsibility and coherence of the rest of the political groups when it comes to approving the municipal budget, whose draft is already finished," Castejón explained, while stating that this budget includes the creation of a Smart City office with a specific budget.

For his part, the rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Alejandro Díaz, stressed the importance of "having a real laboratory" so that "not all the knowledge they have in relation to smart cities remains on paper.

He also specified that he hopes that in a short time citizens can see the project come true, and for this, "we will put all our research groups specialists in the field to work in that office to get the best results," he concluded.
