The health area of Cartagena implements the interconsultation of chronic wounds nursing via telematics (13/01/2018)

The implantation of the interconsultation of nursing of chronic wounds by telematic means in the area of health of Cartagena is going to be developed of pioneering way in the Region of Murcia in five of the 16 health centers that integrate it.

In this way, before the complication of a chronic wound of a patient, the nursing staff of Primary Care can make an interconsultation to the nurse referring area.

This management will be carried out by sending a form with data on the wound, accompanied by its image, so that the consultation can be reflected in the patient's medical history.

Within the new 'Continuity of care project' carried out by the nursing directorate of Cartagena, this initiative seeks to improve the care of patients who suffer complications from ulcers and other chronic injuries and who come to their health center.

Through it, not only will the users benefit, by shortening possible waiting times and improving their quality of life within the possibilities that a chronic wound allows, but also professionals, who will be able to count on an expert reference figure in wounds.

At present, training is being offered to the health centers of Barrio Peral, Cartagena Casco, San Antón, Mazarrón, and Puerto de Mazarrón, with the aim of progressively developing in the rest of the centers.

Chronic wounds

Chronic wounds occur mainly in bedridden, chronic, long-term patients with reduced mobility.

Pressure ulcers (UPP) are considered a health problem and are collected as a quality criterion by the World Health Organization and by the Ministry of Health and Social Services and Equality, which included them as an adverse effect within the Plan. of quality of the National Health System.

Studies on mortality estimate that, of every 100,000 deaths in Spain, 165 are related to UPP, which can be prevented with current technologies up to 95 percent.

On the other hand, venous ulcers affect some 480,000 people in Spain, especially over 65 years.

They are recurrent lesions, so they require long-term treatment until their resolution.

Given the constant evolution of the products for the treatment of wounds and the duty to improve the quality of care, continuous training is necessary in order to address these wounds from an integral and efficient perspective.
