The restoration of the parapet of the wall of Carlos III affected by the fall of a branch ends (03/01/2018)

The Department of Archaeological Heritage, directed by Ricardo Segado, has completed the restoration of the wall of Carlos III in its section in front of the main facade of the former Hospital de Marina.

The original parapet of the wall was damaged by the fall of a large branch of 20,000 kg that the Park and Garden Service of the Department of Infrastructure of the City of Cartagena withdrew after its corresponding damage study.

After the withdrawal of this branch, the staff of the City Council found that the fall of this branch had caused the start and dismantling of the upper line of the limestone masonry of about 4 meters.

Due to the imminent danger of collapse, the Department of Archaeological Heritage drafted a restoration project affected section to refer to the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage of the Autonomous Community.

Through this writing, the City of Cartagena requested the authorization of the Community to act on an element declared of Cultural Interest.

Once this intervention was approved, the restoration was carried out under the direction of Pilar Villalta.

The process consisted of taking data and measurements of the area to be restored, cleaning the affected area and removing loose elements to consolidate the surface of old mortar with lime water.

In addition, a lime and aggregate mortar with a grain size similar to the original was manufactured and the damaged part was reconstructed with old ashlars that had not been damaged.

For this intervention, there was a lifting platform and a truck crane.

The restitution of the damaged part of the wall, coordinated by Mª Carmen Berrocal, was carried out fully respecting this work of the eighteenth century, which is why materials and techniques similar to the original ones were used.

In addition, the restored area was separated from the old one by means of a fiberglass mesh to comply with the regulations of the Historical Heritage Law.
