The ZAL Cartagena attracts the interest of 118 companies to develop a large logistics and port platform (14/12/2017)

In 2018, the first phase begins for the transfer and expansion of the Transportation Center and the Franco Warehouse to the ZAL, which will triple the necessary truck parking spaces

The president of the Community, Fernando López Miras, attended today the meeting of the Bureau for the development of the Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL) of Cartagena, where the feasibility study prepared by the regional government was presented, which concludes that this infrastructure "is technically and economically feasible, and has attracted the interest of 118 companies to develop their logistic and port potential".

This was announced today by the Minister of the Presidency and Development, Pedro Rivera, who, together with Employment, Universities and Business, Juan Hernández, was in charge of presenting the conclusions of this study to the Mesa de la ZAL, which also highlights that " the ideal place for the location of this infrastructure "is the Los Camachos industrial estate," due to its centrality with respect to the regional and port logistics, the available surface area and road connectivity ".

Rivera stressed that the Cartagena ZAL "will contribute to improving the competitiveness, economic activity and development of the region of Cartagena and the entire Region of Murcia," and said that this project "is a clear example of public-private collaboration between public administrations and companies ", which requires that" we all get involved so that it is a success and work together so that this infrastructure meets all the needs ".

Development of the ZAL

This infrastructure, which will have a total area of 3.3 million square meters, will have a Logistics Activities Area and an intermodal terminal, and will be carried out in three actions, matching availability with business demand.

The first of these will consist in the relocation and expansion of the Transportation Center and the Franco Warehouse to the ZAL, which is highly demanded by the businessmen since it will allow the creation of a specific service area for transport companies, decongest the urban center of heavy vehicles and expand infrastructures at the service of companies, above all, importers.

"This phase will be launched throughout 2018, as President Fernando López Miras promised to the Cartagena businessmen," said counselor Pedro Rivera, who said that the corresponding procedure for the transfer of these will be immediately initiated. facilities in the management bodies of both entities and the drafting of the new Franco Warehouse and Transportation Center.

This first phase will allow meeting the new needs of the sector, given that the current facilities have no possibility of growth and with the provision of better services.

In this case, the necessary truck parking spaces will be tripled, giving them 374 seats compared to the current 107.

Likewise, the Community, together with the Port Authority, will launch the preparation of the studies and projects that will make the ZAL of Cartagena a reality and that consist of the development of the urban and environmental documents, the construction and connection with the different infrastructures , especially with the port of Cartagena and the railway network, among others.

For the elaboration of these projects, 1,295,000 euros will be allocated, for which 674,000 euros of European funds have been obtained with which 50 percent of the total cost of the projects is covered and the rest will be financed by the regional government. and the Port Authority.
