detail of Cartagena

The hospital complex of Cartagena is established as a reference in the training of techniques without radiation to treat arrhythmias (13/12/2017)

It is the second Unit of these characteristics in the Region and reference of the II-Cartagena health area and VIII-Mar Menor area

The Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology Unit, dependent on the Cardiology Service of the University Hospital Complex of Cartagena, has consolidated the use of the technique of ablation without fluoroscopy to treat patients with cardiac arrhythmia, and has established itself as a reference in training of this procedure for other hospital centers.

The Unit has received the visit of a medical team of the Lugo Reference Hospital 'Lucus Augusti' to improve the management of the technique that reduces the dose of radiation received by the patient and, therefore, his exposure also to it during the studies electrophysiological, and that is used in the Hospital Santa Lucia since 2014.

It is a pioneering model that is carried out in some hospitals in Spain and which represents a step in the technique of habitual treatment of this disease, the ablation of arrhythmias with radiofrequency.

The ablation of arrhythmias with radiofrequency consists of the application of this energy to points of the heart that produce small injuries similar to burns, in order to eliminate the arrhythmias or to make them less frequent or better tolerated.

This energy is applied through X-rays through small catheters inserted into the heart through arteries or veins.

With the ablation of arrhythmias without a scope, the use of X-rays is avoided and, therefore, the radiation of patients and professionals is avoided.

It is performed through a cardiac navigation system through which the electrophysiologist is able to draw a three-dimensional map of the atrium of the heart and locate the circuit responsible for the tachycardia.

Second Arrhythmia Unit of the Region

The second Arrhythmia Unit of the Region of Murcia of reference for patients in area II of health and area VIII began its journey in 2008, as part of the Cardiology service.

Its portfolio of services includes specific arrhythmia and follow-up consultations for patients with pacemakers and defibrillators, diagnostic tests such as Holter or external event recorders, pharmacological tests, electrophysiological studies, programmed electrical cardioversion, ablation of tachycardia substrates and implant of diagnostic devices.

Ablations and other diagnostic-therapeutic procedures and follow-up consultations of complex devices avoid unnecessary hospital stays and transfers to the regional reference hospital, the Virgen de la Arrixaca Clinical Hospital, with which we work closely.
