An international journal publishes the technique of detection of a cornea disease developed by a research group of the UPCT (29/11/2017)

Scientific Reports magazine, one of the most important internationally in the area of Natural Sciences and belonging to the Nature group, has published the new technique of detection of Keratoconus developed by UPCT professors Francisco J. Fernández Cañavate, Francisco Cavas Martínez and Daniel García Fernández-Pacheco, members of the research group in Multidisciplinary Engineering and Security.

The new keratoconus detection technique is based on a volumetric analysis of the cornea from singular points.

The current volumetric indices present two problems: on the one hand they are not very sensitive to the detection of the incipient cases of Keratoconus because they are not defined locally in the primary region of development of structural anomalies, and on the other hand they do not register the geometric decompensation driven by the asymmetry present during the progression of the disease.

Both problems have been solved in this research work, which has been developed in collaboration with the R + D + i group of the Vissum Clinic of Alicante led by the Professor of Ophthalmology at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, Jorge Alió.

The research has been funded by the Thematic Network for Cooperative Research in Health (RETICS) reference number RD16 / 0008/0012, funded by the Carlos III Health Institute - General Subdirectorate of Networks and Cooperatives Research Centers (National Plan of I + D + i 2008-2011) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
