The European project'Life Tetraclinis' achieves the custody of 200 hectares to conserve the cypress of Cartagena (26/11/2017)

The European project 'Life Tetraclinis', led by the Autonomous Community, has achieved that almost 200 hectares of private land with cypress specimens from Cartagena have been subject to custody by their owners, in order to preserve and increase the specimens of this species, that is only found in continental Europe in the Region of Murcia.

This was indicated this week in the II Conference 'Life Tetraclinis Articulata: Property, local identity and company in the conservation of this emblematic species', held in the auditorium of the Roman Theater Museum of Cartagena and in which companies, administrations met , conservation groups, universities and people interested in nature conservation.

The General Director of Medio Medio, Consuelo Rosauro, said that "these days have offered formulas for their preservation as public-private partnerships or the system of custody of the territory." The cypress forests of Cartagena are a priority European habitat and one of the biggest botanical attractions of the peninsula, concreting in the Region of Murcia its population in all Europe ".

The need to take into account social and economic factors in the management of the Environment was debated, which is becoming increasingly evident.

One of the most powerful conservation tools in the last decade is the custody of the territory, which can be defined as a set of strategies or legal techniques through which owners and users of the territory are involved in conservation and use. of values and natural, cultural and landscape resources.

"This conservation technique and other innovative options for the preservation of the natural environment in collaboration with owners and users of the territory is being promoted for years by the Autonomous Community, including actions aimed at promoting custody and the study of socio-economic factors of the territory in different LIFE projects, "said Consuelo Rosauro.

Regional population

The regional population of cypress in Cartagena is estimated at 8,455 individual trees, spread over 557 hectares.

Almost the whole of its distribution area, located in four subpopulations, is included in the places of the Natura 2000 Network.

Despite the protection of its habitat, a forest fire that occurred in 2011 affected 59 percent of its total area.

Its state of conservation in the Region of Murcia was very weak, a situation that is being remedied thanks to the development of the Life Project.
