MC Cartagena will propose the declaration as BIC of the Casa Maestre to facilitate the visit of Cartagena and tourists (21/11/2017)

MC Cartagena will request the adhesion of the rest of the political groups of the City of Cartagena to request the General Direction of Cultural Property of the CARM to initiate the file that ends with the declaration of Cultural Interest Asset (BIC) for the Casa Maestre.

Thus, the first deputy mayor and councilor of the area of Culture and Heritage, Ricardo Segado (MC Cartagena) will present, during the plenary session of November 30, the reasons that support the demand of the Cartagena training.

If this initiative materializes, the residents of the municipality and visitors would have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of one of the most significant buildings of the modernism boom in our environment, as one of the direct consequences is the obligation of the owner to facilitate the visit. days a month, usually four.

This duty is reflected in art.

8.1.c of Law 4/2007, of March 16, of Cultural Heritage of the CARM, avoiding the aforementioned need for access that the constant closure of the building makes it suffer pathologies of the situation, and even that urban furniture can be installed of various kinds in front of him.

Insufficient protection

It is worth remembering that the Casa Maestre (1906) currently has a protection regime contemplated in the Special Plan of Ordination and Protection of the Historic District (PEOPCH), although it has been manifested as insufficient, inexplicably lacking protection. , the façade facing the old street of El Pocico.

Actual state

The property, privately owned, retains the original staircase.

At this point, it should be noted that its previous owner, a banking institution, emptied its interior.

However, there is news that a room on the first floor and possibly one of the floors of the building is in perfect condition.

Reflection of the mining boom

The Casa Maestre, as happened with all the civil constructions of the time, had its origin in the rise of mining companies, whose owners agglutinate political and economic power.

It was located in one of the new garden squares of the city, that of Valarino Togores (now Plaza San Francisco), which together with the Plaza de la Merced was one of the preferred areas for the bourgeoisie of the city.

In 1906 the powerful Maestre family commissioned the Catalan architect, Marcelino Coquillat Llofriú, the plans of his new residence.

The project was directed by Victor Beltrí, not departing at any time from the design by Coquillat.

It turned out the work that uncovers a more rococo stage in Beltrí.

The stone façade contains a profuse vegetal decoration with spectacular acanthus leaves, abounding in a floral design in which greater use is made of the hose.

Also, the curvilinear stone lookout in the central part is one of the points where the design gains more strength and originality.

All the details of the building are of a good finish, highlighting the carpentry of the main door, whose callers and handles are authentic filigree of modernist goldsmithing.

Gratitude

Finally, the content of the motion reflects the gratitude of MC Cartagena to the magnificent work done by D. Francisco Javier Pérez Rojas, in his book 'Cartagena 1874-1936.

Urban Transformation and Architecture ', collecting, with profusion and detail, questions of great value in relation to this transcendental historical stage of the municipality.
